KALEIDOS Expert System

Diagnosing Ancient Monuments with Expert System.

It provides on-line management and interpretation of the data
gathered on the monuments.

Advises Safety Managers for intervention and alert the Civil

Protection, if necessary, through automatic telephone calls.
Inputs Outputs
Through another subsystem called ‘INDACO’. The user can access the processing results
Data entry to INDACO can be manual or through a window-based interface. The
automated. interface draws on the screen graphical
representations of the objects (monuments,
zones and sections, processes, measures) that
INDACO checks inputted data for validity and
have been assessed and displays them using a
reliability. colour scale based on the objects' state.

Then passes it to Kaleidos system. Natural language explanations of the analysis

are shown on the screen too.
Some of the parameters are air temperature and

structures (dome and top of the Towers) Via the interface, user can also activate
management functions, such as print screen,
and access the internal database.
Algorithms
● State of Single Measurement

The measurements are checked against pre-set thresholds, determined on

the base of the physiological behaviour recorded in the past, at three different
levels

● Empirical Evaluation

linear combination of the state indexes of the instruments, weighted on the

ground of the reliability and significance of the instrument.

Rule Based Reasoning
The system contains various rules to understand and analyse condition of the Monument.
Eg.
If
the measure of the dilatometer 1/A is
anomalous and its speed is highly
anomalous
And
the measure of the dilatometer 2/A is
normal and its speed is anomalous
Then
the activation state of the opening of
cracks in the zone 1 of the dome is
highly anomalous

Applications
● The first version of the Kaleidos was delivered for the management of the
safety of the Cathedral of Pavia and of six towers in the same town.

● KALEIDOS was developed and delivered on personal computers using Prolog,

C and VisualBasic under MS Windows. The version installed in Pavia deals
with 120 instruments of the Cathedral and of the six towers.
