MENTAL HEALTH

MENTAL HEALTH
Relating to the mind The state of being free from
Relating to, or affected by illness.
a disorder of the mind
Mental Health ≠ Physical Health

- Mental health is not as visible as physical health

- Sometimes not easily detected or recognized

So how can we detect

mental health??
BEHAVIOURS
Sleep, eat, attention and concentration, coping skill, social skill,
communication skill, management skill, …..

Developmental stage

Social expectation

Family expectation
• is when you expose behaviours NOT according
to widely accepted standard/ norm.
• Persistent emotional pain and suffering,
behaviours that are perceived disturbing to
others, failure to perform ordinary day-to-day
activities, and irrational or frequent failure to
exercise self-control.
What happened?

Brain is the control center.

When we detect one’s

behaviour as not according
to the standard, most
likely there’s a different
way of command in the
control center.

 Can’t sit still during lessons

 Avoids eye contact
 Any other examples…?

Human Brain
Always consider…
Biological factor
Genetic, organic, neurological, …

Psychosocial factor
Upbringing, trauma, abuse, domestic violance, …
There are terms that we usually use out of
habit/casually:

- “Autistic”
- “Down Syndrome”
- “Weird”
- “Loner”
- “Asperger’s”
- “Crazy”
- “Hyperactive”
- “Nutter”
- “Schizophrenia”
- “Psycho”
In the professional world . . .
Only professionals need and use the clinical terms for diagnoses and
treatment purposes. We need to use these terms to identify, diagnose, and
choose the best treatment or therapy for them.
• If the symptoms meet the criteria listed
in DSM-5, then the diagnosis is confirmed.

• Even with the DSM-5, some diagnoses are

very difficult to make and can take a lot
of time, therefore, diagnosing terms are
very difficult.

• So, students do not have to worry about

the clinical terms, let alone labelling!
What can you do?
In school, those terms don’t matter.

Just be aware that people can be different,

Acknowledge and accept the difference
With no labelling!
