 Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the
natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution
can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as
noise, heat or light.
 80% of marine pollution is caused because of land based activities
 12% are from oil spills
 Nonpoint source pollution- runoff
-septic tanks, cars, trucks, boats, farms, ranches etc.
 Air pollution which settles into oceans
 Dirt and soil from fields and construction sites which is contaminated

8 MILLION TONS OF PLASTIC ENTERS THE OCEAN PER YER!

 Man-made chemicals can cause serious health problems
-cancer, damage to the immune system, behavioral problems,
and reduced fertility.
 Reduces the water's dissolved oxygen and suffocates marine life
 Garbage makes its way to shore where it pollutes beaches and other coastal
habitats.
-May close down beaches because of severity
 Plastic garbage, which decomposes very slowly, is often mistaken for food by marine
animals.
-Plastics have been found blocking the airways and stomachs of many animals like
whales, dolphins, seals, and turtles. Plastic six-pack rings for drink bottles can also
choke marine animals.
