Main Components and Functions of Inverter Assembly

Item Outline
Converts the high-voltage direct current from the boost converter into three-
Inverter
phase alternating current for driving the MG1 and MG2.
Boosts the nominal voltage of DC 288 V that is output by the HV battery to the
maximum voltage of DC 650 V. The boost converter consists of the boost IPM
Boost
(Integrated Power Module) with a built-in IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar
Converter
Transistor) which performs the switching control, and the reactor which stores
energy. By using these components, the boost converter boosts the voltage.
Controls the inverter and boost converter in order to drive the MG1 or MG2, or
MG ECU causes them to generate electricity in accordance with the signals received
from the HV ECU.

Precautions for Removal and Installation

– Removal High-voltage Cover
1. Remove the bolts labeled “A” and “B”.
2. Using a screwdriver wrapped with insulating “B”
tape, pry the high-voltage cover straight up bit
by bit [approx. 2 mm (0.08 in.)]. “A”
a. Pry the high-voltage cover by placing a
screwdriver in the “A” side of the cover first.
b. In the same way, pry the cover of the
opposite side (“B” side).
c. Repeat the above steps until the cover can be
removed by hand easily.
NOTICE: Guide Pin
When the lifting the cover,
do NOT tilt it. Otherwise,
the guide pins of the cover
may be broken.

Do NOT damage the inner wall surface of the

inverter while removing the bolts. If it is
damaged, water or debris could enter and
cause problems.

Precautions for Removal and Installation

– Installation MG1 Side MG2 Side

1. Install the MG2 high-voltage cable.

2. Tighten the bolts labeled “A” to fix the “D” “B”

high-voltage cable in place. “f”“e”“d” “c”“b”“a”

3. Tighten bolts “B” to fix the cable terminals in
place in the following order: “a”, “b”, and “c”.
4. Install the MG1 high-voltage cable.
5. Tighten the bolts labeled “C” to fix the
high-voltage cable in place. “C” “A” “A”
4 “C” 1
6. Tighten the bolts labeled “D” to fix the cable
terminals in place in the following order: “d”, “e”, and “f”.
7. Set the high-voltage cover to the inverter assembly.
a. Insert the guide pins into the guide holes.
b. Push the cover down all the way while keeping it level.
8. Secure the cover with the 2 bolts.
NOTICE: If the bolts are tightened without [Wrong] [Correct]

completely pushing down the cover, the guide pins

may break.
Check the condition of the sealing rubber seal
before installing the cover.
• Attached securely to the high-voltage cover.
• No damage or foreign matter is present.
29 NOTE: Do NOT touch by hand directly.

EV Drive Mode
– In the EV drive mode, the vehicle runs like an electric
vehicle which is driven with only the electric motor.
– When the EV drive mode switch is pushed on in the
READY ON state, the EV drive mode will be turned on
and the EV drive mode indicator light will be
illuminated

EV Drive Mode
– In the following conditions, the EV drive mode may not
be turned on and the message appears in the multi-
information display with beep sound.

Main Conditions Reference

The hybrid system gets hot (After the vehicle is left in
hot weather, after driving on slopes, high speed 
driving, etc.).
The hybrid system gets cold (After the vehicle has
been left for a long time in location below 0 deg C 
[32 deg F]).
Engine Coolant Temp.:
During gasoline engine warm up. -A: Less than 70 deg C (158 deg F)
-W: Less than 40 deg C (104 deg F)
The HV battery charging level is less than 4. SOC level is less than 50 %
The vehicle speed is about 40 km/h (25 mph) or more. 
The accelerator pedal is depressed strongly. 
The defroster is in use. 

EV Drive Mode
– The engine is always started when power switch ON
(READY ON state) under normal conditions. However,
the hybrid system can be turned on the EV Drive Mode
by performing the following procedure.
1. Turn the power switch ON without depressing the
brake pedal and then confirm conditions of defroster
(OFF) and hybrid battery (Charging level is 4 or
more).
2. Push and hold the EV drive mode switch and then
push the power switch while depressing the brake
pedal (The engine may start depending on the
system conditions*).
*: Engine coolant temp. is less then 0 deg C (32 deg F), etc.

EV Drive Mode
– The EV drive mode may be automatically cancelled in
the following conditions. In this case, a beep sounds
and the EV drive mode indicator light flashes and then
goes out.
• The HV battery charging level is 2 or lower.
• The vehicle speed exceeds the following speed:
 About 40 km/h (25 mph) at engine coolant temp.
is approx. 40 deg C (104 deg F) or more
 About 30 km/h (19 mph) at engine coolant temp.
less than 40 deg C (104 deg F)
• The accelerator pedal is depressed strongly.
Reference
• Available driving range differs depending on factors such as the HV battery charging level
or air conditioning condition, the driving range is from about several hundred meters to 1
km (about 0.6 miles).
• Hybrid vehicle is designed to have the best fuel economy during normal driving (driving
using a combination of gasoline engine and electric motor power). Frequent use of the EV
drive mode may worsen fuel economy.

Cutoff of High-voltage Circuits

– High-voltage circuits can be cut off either
automatically or manually to prevent electrocution.

Cutoff interlocked SMRs are turned OFF when the driver turns the
with the power mode power mode OFF.
The HV ECU receives a signal of the occurrence of
Cutoff in the event of
a collision via the airbag sensor assembly, and
a collision
Automatic Cutoff turns OFF the SMRs.
[System Main The interlock device detects whether the service
Relays] (SMRs) plug is installed. If the technician forgets to
Cutoff when the
remove the service plug, and they perform a
interlock device is
high-voltage operation, removing the inverter
activated
with converter assembly cover will turn OFF the
SMRs due to the interlock circuit.
• The service plug located in the middle of the HV
battery makes it possible to cut off all high-
voltage circuits.
Manual Cutoff with Service Plug • Remove the service plug when inspecting or
maintaining high-voltage circuits.
(Wait for 10 min. after removing the
service plug )
