“ ‘Agreement’ means using a
singular verb after a singular or
uncountable subject and a plural
verb after a plural subject.

“ Subject/verb agreement is simple :

If the subject of a sentence is SINGULAR,


then the verb must be SINGULAR

If the subject of a sentence is PLURAL,


then the verb must be PLURAL

“ An “s” on a verb usually indicates
that a verb is SINGULAR

An “s” on a noun usually indicates


that the noun is PLURAL

▰The dog(singular subject/noun) barks (verb) at night

▰The dogs(plural subject/noun) bark (verb) at night

“ Subject/preposition agreement is simple :

If the subject of a sentence is SINGULAR,


then the verb must be SINGULAR

If the subject of a sentence is PLURAL,


then the verb must be PLURAL

▰The door(singular subject/noun) to the rooms (preposition) is(verb) locked.

▰The doors(plural subject/noun) to the room (preposition) are(verb) locked.

Be careful on deciding which one is the subject and


which one is the preposition. Do not mistaken the
object of the preposition as the subject. 9

When a prepositional phrase comes between the subject and the verb, be sure that the
verb agrees with the subject.
