►Properties of
concrete
Concrete:
►Concrete is composite material in
which a binding material (cement),
water and inert materials (aggregates)
are present in definite proportion .
Properties of concrete
► These are some properties of concrete.
1. The concrete should have enough
workability at early or fresh state.
2. And have maximum strength at harden
state.
3. Concrete should have resistance to
freezing and thawing.
4. Concrete should have resistance to water
tightness (low permeability.
5. concrete must be durable.
6. It should also have resistance against
sulphates and chlorides.
7. It should have resistance to abrasion
effects.
8. And the concrete must economical. Etc.
►Segregation .
Segregation:

► Segregation may be defined as separation of the

constituents of heterogeneous mixture so that
their distribution is no longer uniform.
► This can be seen as a separation of coarse
aggregate from the mortar, caused from either the
settling of heavy aggregate to the bottom or the
separation of the aggregate from the mix due to
improper placement. Some factors that increase
segregation are:
► Larger maximum particle size and
proportion of the larger particles.
► High specific gravity of coarse aggregate.
► Decrease in the amount of fine particles.
► Particle shape and texture.
► Water/cement ratio.
►Good handling and placement
techniques are most important in
prevention of segregation.
►False setting
False setting:
► False setting time is evidenced by a
significantly loss of plasticity shortly after
mixing.
► This leads to stiffening due to rapid
reformation of secondary gypsum.
► No evolution of heat occurs during false
setting.
►False setting time can be prevented by
simply mixing the concrete for a longer
period of time without adding water.
►Some admixtures can also stops false
setting.
►Bleeding
Bleeding:
► Bleeding is a form segregation in which
some of the water in the mix tends to rise
to the surface of freshly placed concrete.
► Bleeding is also called water gain.
► Bleeding is the result of the inability of the
solid constituents of the mix to hold all of
the mixing water when they
Factors on which bleeding
depends.
1. Water content of the mix.
2. Properties pf cement.
3. Temperature.
4. Addition of pozzolones or aluminium
powder.
5. Air entrainment agents.
