COMPETENCY
MODULE TITLE

Using hand tools

MODULE DESCRIPTOR
This unit covers the knowledge, skills and
attitudes on the safe use, handling and
maintenance of tools.
Definition of Terms
Diagnostic tools - used to test the integrity of
circuits and the quality of electricity in computer
components and to test the functionality of
computer
Hazards - risks; dangers
Insulation - a material that reduces or prevents
the transmission of heat or sound or electricity.
Static electricity - an accumulation of electric
charge on an insulated body
Definition of Terms
Hardware- - is the physical components of a
computer
Hardware Tools- is the physical components of a
computer such as the machine and wiring, or
tools and machinery or heavy military
equipment.
Tools-is a handheld device that aids in
accomplishing a task
Toolkit - a set of tools designed to be used
together or for a particular purpose.
Environmental Safety and Health
Program requires the following:
All tools be kept in good condition with
regular maintenance
The right tool be used for the job
Each tool be examined before use AND
damaged or defective tools NOT to be
used
Environmental Safety and Health
Program requires the following:
Tools be operated according to
manufacturer’s instructions
The right protective equipment for the tool
and activity be used
HARDWARE TOOLS
is the physical
components of a
computer such as the
machine and wiring, or
tools and machinery or
heavy military
equipment.
Four Categories of
Hardware
1.ESD Tools
2.Hand Tools
3.Cleaning Tools
4.Diagnostic Tools
1. ELECTRO STATIC
DISCHARGE (ESD) Tools
friction of moving air alone will charge
suspended particles and cause the
buildup of static electrical charges on
people and objects in the environment.
1.1.ANTI-STATIC WRIST STRAP

- used to prevent
ESD damage to
computer
equipment.
1.2.ANTI –STATIC MAT

- used to stand on
or place
hardware on to
prevent static
electricity from
building up.
2. HAND TOOLS
- is a device for
performing work
on a material or a
physical system
using only hands.
2.1.FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER

- used to loosen
or tighten slotted
screws.
2.2. PHILIP HEAD SCREWDRIVER

- used to loosen
or tighten
crosshead screws.
2.3. TORX SCREWDRIVER

used to loosen or
tighten screws
that have a star-
like depression on
the top.
2.4. HEX DRIVER
sometimes called
a nut driver, is
used to tighten
nuts in the same
way that a
screwdriver
tightens screws.
2.5. NEEDLE-NOSE-PLIER

Or some times

called long nose
plier, used to hold
small parts.
2.6. WIRE CUTTER

used to strip and

cut wires.
2.7. TWEEZERS

- used to
manipulate small
parts
2.8. PART RETRIEVER

- used to
manipulate small
parts
2.9. FLASHLIGHT

used to light up
areas that you
cannot see well.
2.10. CRIMPING TOOLS

A crimping tool is a device

used to conjoin two pieces
of metal by deforming one
or both of them in a way
that causes them to hold
each other. The result of
the tool's work is called
a crimp.
2.12. CABLE/WIRE STRIPPER

A small, hand-held
device used to strip
the electrical
insulation from
electric wires.
2.11. PUNCH DOWN TOOL

A hand tool used to

connect
telecommunications and
network wires to a patch
panel, punch down block,
keystone module, or surface
mount box.
3.CLEANING TOOLS
appropriate cleaning tools is essential
when maintaining or repairing
computers.
3.1. LINT – FREE CLOTH

used to clean
different
computer
components
without
scratching or
leaving debris
3.2. COMPRESSED AIR

-used to blow
away dust and
debris from
different
computer parts
without touching
the components.
3.3. CABLE TIES

- used to bundle
cables neatly
inside and outside
of a computer.
3.4. PARTS ORGANIZER

- used to hold
screw, jumpers,
fasteners and
other small parts
and prevents
them from
getting mixed
together
3.5. Isopropyl Alcohol
typically used on
the CPU and heat
sink to make sure
they are clean
before they are
mated together. It
can also be useful
for cleaning
contacts that have
begun to corrode.
4. DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS
- Is to diagnose hardware problems. -
To locate or trace where the
problems come from.
4.1. Multi meter

- used to test the

integrity of circuits
and the quality of
electricity in
computer
components.
4.2.Loopback Adapter
- used to test the
functionality of
computer ports
4.3. NETWORK CABLE TESTER

A is a useful device
that allows you to
check the continuity
of the cable to figure
out if the signal is
strong enough to get
through to the
network.
