The following are the different types of software
widely used by creators of digital art.
1. Photo and Graphics editing Programs
– used for drawing, painting, typing text, and
retouching. Photographs can be edited and
retouched by adjusting the lighting, vibrance,
contrast and color balance. There are filters
and effects that can be added to a photo.
You also use this software to add text and
other designs to a drawing or picture.
2. Vector graphic editors- allow to create and
edit vector graphics. A vector graphic is a
computer image made up of points, lines,
corners, and shapes that can be digitally
manipulated, rotated and proportionally scaled
to produce a desired outcome. This type of
editing software is more suitable
and effective for creating topography, logo
designs, and illustrations with sharp edges such
as cartoons and clip art images.
3. Computer aided design (CAD) – is the use of
computer systems to assist in the creation,
modification, analysis, or optimization of a
design. CAD software is used to increase the
productivity of the designer, improve the quality
of design, improve communications through
documentation, and to create a data base for
manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of
electronic files for printing, machining, or other
manufacturing operations.
4. Diagramming Software- is a computer
program that is used to produce
graphical diagrams. Among other uses,
such diagrams are often used in
software and technical development
and business to represent
dataflows,workflows, software
architecture and organizational charts.
5. Deskstop publishing software- are
used to create posters, flyers,
brochures, magazines, newspapers
and books. Graphic designers and
production artists are the principal
users of this type of software for
laying out periodical publications,
posters, and other print media.
6. 3D Software- are used to create three
dimensional images usually for use in
video games, animation, and videos or
films requiring special visual effects. They
are also used in architecture to create
digital models of planned structures. For
beginners and hobbyists there are many
free software that have comparable
features and capabilities.
Open – source software or freeware –
are software that can be seen over
the internet and used free of charge
a. GIMP- used for image retouching
and editing
b. Inkscape- an open source vector
graphic editor
c. Blender- used for creating
animation, 3D and others
Logos come in different types:
1. Personal Logos- Logos as personal
images are used to brand possessions,
achievements, or even one’s identity.
Through logos, simple but strong
declarations such as “This is me”, “I own
that”, I made this seemed to be an ancient
practice. For centuries, potters were
inscribing their personal signs on jars vases
and figurines they created.
2. Crests- are logos that are used to
identify a family, country, or
organization. Before only powerful
and elite organizations or families
could afford to make their own crests.
Often, they want their crests very rich
and detailed in
decorations, such symbols, figures, or
objects.
most popular symbols in our visual
environment today are logos and
trademarks for various business. Logos for
business gradually became so competitive
that a company had to work on its
image in order to survive. Each business
aimed to have a logo that was not
just more identifiable, visible, and
recognizable, but that when seen would
men a better company, product, or service
BASIC STEPS IN CREATING A DIGITAL LOGO
1.Visualize and sketch ideas- No designer
has ever been faulted for
sketching too much. When ideas present
themselves, sketch them immediately.
When they do not present themselves, stop
sketching and work on something else.
2. Scan to digitize or make the image appear on
the computer screen-
Scan the sketch to a flash drive as a digital
image. To scan the image, you need a basic
piece of equipment known as scanner. A
scanner enables you to incorporate in your
digital logos real world sketches and drawings
that you have made. A scanner is an essential
tool to all logo designers
who need to alter and enhance their designs
digitally.
3. Get started with image
programs- Many drawing and
image software programs are
available to create digital logos.
Some programs are downloadable
or open source (Photo Illustrator,
Inkscape) and can be
learned easily.
