This document summarizes a research project analyzing black hole formation in anti-de Sitter spacetime using perturbation theory. The project looked at two cases: 1) a spherically symmetric shell of scalar field and 2) a non-symmetric deformation of the spherical metric. In both cases, resonant modes leading to black hole formation were identified and their evolution over space and time was analyzed. Future work proposed generalizing to fully deformed AdS spacetime and using the AdS/CFT correspondence to translate black hole results to a thermalization problem on the AdS boundary.

• Which Follows Einstein’s
Special Theory of Relativity • Has a constant scalar negative curvature • Maximally Symmetric – i.e. all points on this space are identical. What are CFTs ? • CFTs – Conformal Field Theories. • These are theories that remain invariant under “Conformal Transformations” ( transformations that preserve angles locally ). • Applications are in Condensed Matter Physics , Statistical Mechanics , String Theory etc. AdS / CFT Correspondence • Gravitational Theories • Conformal Field within d+1 Dimensional Theories at the d AdS Space-time. Dimensional surface of AdS Space-time. The results of one theory can be translated to the results of another theory ! In our case: Black Hole Formation in AdS = Attainment of Thermal Equilibrium on Surface of AdS. Metric Tensor It’s a mathematical object that defines the notions of time, distance, volume, curvature, angle, and separating the future and the past. Perturbation Theory • Perturbation theory comprises of mathematical methods for finding an approximate solution to a problem, by starting from the exact solution of a related, simpler problem. • Method used in this project – Expansion to higher order terms. e.g. A = A0 + eA1+ e2A2 … Qualitative Description of Problem Statement and it’s Solution We analyze two seemingly different cases of gravitational collapse in AdS Spacetime using Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and solving the equations using Perturbation Theory. Case-1 :Spherically Symmetric A spherically symmetric shell of massless scalar field is left to move in a 4+1 dimensional AdS Spacetime and solved using Perturbation Theory. Features Analyzed – 1. Evolution with space and time. 2. Reaction on Metric and it’s backreaction on field. 3. Resonant Modes that lead to Black Hole Formation. Case -2 : Non Symmetric A deformation is caused on the spherically symmetric part of 4+1 dimensional AdS spacetime, replacing the scalar field and solved using Perturbation Theory. Features Analyzed - 1. Nature of Deformation/Perturbation. 2. Evolution with space and time. 3. Impact on non-spherical part of metric and its backreaction. 4. Resonant modes that forms Black Holes. Observations and Results • Disappearing Resonant Modes were found, which limits the possibility of Black Hole Formation. • Secular terms (terms that invalidate perturbation theory) found and removed. • Nature of Perturbation found to be “Tensorial” ( an unexpected result, given that it behaved in a way similar to a Scalar Field ) Future Scope of Work • Analyze the case of a generally deformed AdS Spacetime. • Search For a general proof for vanishing Resonant Modes, based on Hidden Symmetries in AdS. • Use AdS/CFT Correspondence to translate the obtained results of Black Hole Problem to corresponding Thermalization Problem.
