Science & Technology Timeline Pt.2

1954 - Nuclear Oct 4, 1957 - Oct 31, 1959 -

Power Plant Launch of First Heart
Russian Sputnik Pacemaker
Apr 12, 1955 - Oct 31, 1958
Invention of First Laser
Vaccine for Polio
Hydrogen Bomb ( Major Event 1 )
They exploded the Hydrogen Bomb on Nov 1st,
1952 at Eniwetok Atoll a remote location in
the South Pacific. What happen exceeded any
expectations as the explosion cloud was 5
miles high and 4 miles wide. The site of
Eniwetok Atoll was simply gone leaving only a
crater of where the place used to be. This is
incredibly important because there a
stronger weapon for the government to use
other than the Atom Bomb.
Russian Launch Sputnik ( Major Event 2 )

On Oct 4, 1957 to the world suprise

the Russians launched the first
Satellite into space. The Sputnik
would orbit Earth before falling back
down into the atmosphere. This had
monumental importance because it
was the first human-made object
into space sparking the space race.
The Vaccine For Polio ( Major Event 3 )
On the day of Apr 12, 1955 was said to be by
historians “The most exciting days of the
Decade”. That day researcher announce that
the Salk vaccine has been proven to prevent
polio. This excited the world as the polio
disease in America and the rest of the world has
cause major epidemics resulting in the death of
thousands. This is important because with this
being effective we can prevent polio and
present today Polio has mostly been eradicated.
Frank McNamara ( Important Person 1 )
He was a well known executive of Hamilton credit
corporation and founder of the Diner’s Club.
McNamara created the the first credit card to
work in restaurants allowing customers to come
in without any money yet still pay. This was an
important invention because this allows people
to pay faster for bills and to have money on them,
but not in physical form.
Joseph Woodland ( Important Person 2 )
Joseph was a inventor and graduate of Drexel institute
of Technology in Philadelphia. He invented the Barcode
when ask to find a way to speed up checkout in stores
and he got the idea when he drew one in the sand on
the beach. The Barcode Joseph said was inspired by
morse code that just been shrunk down onto the label.
This invention was important because it help speed up
the process of checkout in stores and stock
calculation of products.
John Mauchly ( Important Person 3)
John Mauchly is a American Physicist that
along with J. Presper Eckert design UNIVAC
1 (UNIversal Automatic Computer 1) the
first commercially available computer.
This was important because the computer
change the lives of many people and this is
one of the starting point where the
invention really took off to the public.
UNIVAC 1 ( Artifact )
The UNIVAC 1 was
the first
commercially
public computer.
This was the
beginning for
public use of
computers and
the great future
of the internet.
Credit Card ( Artifact )
This is the first
Credit card
invented by Frank
McNamara to help
pay at stores and
restaurants quickly.
This would be the
basis for the credit
cards of today.
Outcomes & Effects
The development of Science & Technology in the 1950s
greatly influence the future invention that would greatly
affect the world. The UNIVAC 1 for example was the basis for
the future use of computers and later the internet. These
invention would improve the lives of many around the
world with especially the vaccine for polio. In conclusion,
the inventions and technology of the 1950s would impact
the future inventions that came after it.
