LEED & GRIHA PROVISIONS
Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design &
Green Rating For Integrated Habitat Assessment
1.What is LEED ?
 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is one of the
most popular green building certification program used worldwide. It
provides a framework to create healthy, efficient and cost saving green
buildings.
 Founded in 1993 by USGBC ( United States Green Building Council) by
Mike Italino and David Gottfried.

2.Why LEED ?
 To lower the operating cost of a building.
 To reduce waste generation.
 To conserve energy and water consumption.
 To reduce emission of harmful green house gases.

3.How LEED works ?
FOUR CERTIFICATION LEVELS

 Projects earn points to satisfy green building requirements.

 The number of points the project earns determines its level of LEED
certification.
4. Main Credit Categories:
 Sustainable sites credits
 Water efficiency credits
 Energy and Atmosphere
 Material and resources credits
 Indoor environmental quality credits
5. Other Credit Categories
 Awareness and Education
 Innovation and Design
 Location and Linkages
 Green Infrastructure and
 Building Credits
 Regional Priority Credits
7.Steps to LEED Certification.
8.Case Study :
ITC GREEN CENTRE
 ITC GREEN CENTRE is a hotel division headquarter located in sector-
32 Gurgaon.
 It is a LEED Platinum certified building with 56 points.

9.Why ITC GREEN CENTRE ?
 ITC harvests 100% of the rain water and recycle all of the water used in the
building.
 The building is so designed that allows maximum natural light to penetrate
thereby reducing the energy consumption.
 The high albedo roof coating reduces the amount of heat absorbed by
reflecting over 90% of sunlight and reducing the roof surface temperature
by 30 degrees.
 The low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds in the materials used in
construction ensures pure air circulation in the building.

GRIHA – Green Rating For Integrated
Habitat Assessment

1.What is GRIHA?
 It is a National Rating system for Green Building of India .
 It is developed by TERI (The Energy and Resources
Institute), Ministry of New and Renewable
Energy(MNRE), Govt. of India.
 It is adopted as the National standard system in 2007.
2.Key Highlights of GRIHA
 Innovative tool to facilitate design, construction, operation of a
green building.
 Sets out guidelines for design, construction and operation.
 Sets performance benchmarks for key resources like energy and
water.
 Measure of “greenness” of a building.
3.Credit Categories

 Innovation
 Site and Facility Management.
 Water Efficiency
 Energy Efficiency
 Health and Comfort.
4.GRIHA Rating System

 Sets of 34 criteria.
 Point system with differential weightage on various criteria.
5.Steps to get GRIHA rating

 Registration.
 Orientation workshop.
 Site visits
 Documentation
 Review
 Evaluation by external visitors
 Award of provisional rating.
 Final rating.

7. Conclusion

By taking an integrated approach to design , LEED and GRIHA

brings valuable environmental savings and outcomes while also
saving money through energy, water and waste reduction over life of
the building.
