Loading Data
• Global Mapper has multiple options for Loading Data and will display multiple data
sets in correct geospatial positions. Data can be imported as part of a workspace
(.gmw) file, accessed from online sources or imported from a database
connection.

For more information on opening data files, from the file menu - see the Open
Data File(s) section.
• Data files can also be dragged and dropped into the map to automatically load.

Load Workspace
• This Function can be used with Ctrl+W on your keyboard.
• The Load Workspace command allows the user to load a Global Mapper
workspace file (.gmw) previously saved with the Save Workspace command.
Loading Data from a Spatial
Database
• There are two ways to load data from a spatial
database:
• Specify the connection parameters for the spatial
database connection. This applies to all of the
enterprise databases: ArcSDE, MySQL, Oracle, PostGIS
and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or higher.
• Use the Connection Manager to define spatial
database connections. You can access this
functionality by choosing Open Spatial Database...
from the File menu.
• Specify the file that contains a Spatialite database
(*.sqlite), a GeoMedia Access Warehouse (*.mdb), an
Esri file (.gdb), personal geodatabase (*.mdb), or an
Esri ArcSDE geodatabase connection definition (*.sde).
(Use Esri ArcCatalog or ArcMap to create an ArcSDE
geodatabase connection file.) Choose Open Data
File(s) from the File menu to perform this task.
Loading Generic Text File
• The Open Generic Text File (s)
command allows the user to
import data from a wide
variety of generic ASCII text
formats.
• Selecting the Open Generic
Text File command prompts
the user to select the file(s) to
load and then displays the
Generic Text File Import
Options dialog. This dialog
allows can be used to specify
how the text file(s) are
formatted so that they can be
imported.
• The Generic Text File Import
Options dialog has several
options that allow you to
define how your data is
formatted.
Exporting Data
• Global Mapper
supports the export
of many different

• Check this option to label features of
this type by default. The default label is
the Feature Name attribute.
• Select Label Font...
• This opens a dialog for configuring the
label properties for the Feature Type,
including Font, background, relative
position, size, and rotation.
• This dialog allows you to select the font to
use for the point, as well as set up other label
display options for the point, including where
to position the label relative to the point,
what angle (if any) by which to rotate point
labels, how to fill the background for the
labels, and whether or not to display the
labels at a fixed height in ground units rather
than a fixed font size in pixels.
Point Styles
• 3D Model
• Specify a 3D model to associate with the point type. For more information on
using 3D Point Symbols see Working with 3D Models.
• To create a 3D Point style from an existing model, select a built in model from the
'3D Model:' drop-down menu and select apply. To apply a custom model first add
it in the Custom Symbols section. In order to display in the 3D viewer the 3D points
will need to contain an elevation attribute and height attribute. The 3D model will
scale relative to these values. See Working with 3D Models for more information.

• Note: If you have existing points that you are applying 3D Point Styles to, we
recommend selecting between 10-20 point features at a time to evaluate your 3D
point style. Processing and display rendering time for 3D point styles will vary by
machine specification and minimum machine specifications will not be sufficient
for working with large groups of 3D points that have been assigned 3D point styles.

of the Configuration
menu allows the user to

Line Styles
• Drawing Style
• The line style, width, and color can be modified on a type-by-type basis.
• Line Style
• See Built-In Line Types and Styles for the available line styles, or see the sample at the
bottom of the dialog.
• Line Width
• When selecting a line width, you can choose a fixed width in screen pixels, which means that
the line will draw the same width regardless of your zoom level, or you can choose the option
to specify the line width as a New Fixed Width in Meters. When you do that your line will be
drawn at a given number of meters in width, which means it will get thicker as you zoom in
and smaller as you zoom out to maintain the same width in ground units.
• Use Flat Endcaps for this Line
• Check this option to use rectangular endcaps to lines, rather than rounded ones. This
difference is more visible with thicker line widths.
Line Styles
• Label Display
• Show Labels for Lines of This Type
• Check this option to turn line labels
on for the selected line type.
• Center Label for Lines of This Type
• Check this option to center the
label within the line, rather than

• This button will restore the default style for the selected Point
Type.
• Restore Default Style for All Types
• This option will restore the default styles for all Point Types.
• The Display Roads As Fat Lines When Zoomed In
• This option allows users to turn on/ off the "fattening" of road
lines when zoomed in tight on them.
