Introduction
• Injection molding technology is a method of processing, predominantly
used for thermoplastic polymers
• It consists of heating thermoplastic material until it melts then forcing this
melted plastic into a steel mold, where it cools and solidifies
• The use of injection molding is one of the principal tools to produce the
elegant product structures with reduced part counts and the simplicity of
assembly
• Since injection molding is a process that utilizes expensive tooling and
equipment, it is vital to be able to obtain part and tooling cost estimates at
the earliest stages of design.
Where
Cb = cost of mold base, $
Ac = area of mold base cavity plate, cm^2
hp = combined thickness of cavity and core plates in mold base, cm.
• Above graph illustrates the relationship between the plate area required
for a single cavity and the plate area required for an increasing number of
cavities. It can be seen that a power law curve closely matches this data and
so we can write
where Ac1 and Acn represent the areas of a single-cavity and
n-cavity mold base plate
