Outline
• Heat transfer applications
• Modes of heat transfer
• Thermal expansion
Heat Transfer Applications in AEN
• Air preheater
• Radiator
• Air conditioning
• Steam coils
• Fire tube/water tube
• Insulations
What is heat???
• Heat is the amount of energy flowing from one body to another
spontaneously due to their temperature difference
Units of heat
• Calorie(cal)
• Kilocalorie(kcal)
• Joule(J)
• btu

• The SI unit for heat is Joule

• 1cal=4.184J
• 1btu=1055.06J
Modes of Heat Transfer
• Conduction
• Convection
• Radiation
Conduction
• Conduction is the process by which heat is transmitted through a
medium from one particle to another.
Law of heat conduction(Fourier’s Law)
• The rate of heat transfer through a material is proportional to the
negative temperature gradient and to the cross sectional area.

•Q (𝑇𝐻 − 𝑇𝐶 )/𝐿

•Q A
Quiz
• Why are metals good thermal conductors?
 The close packing of the metal ions in the lattice

 The delocalised electrons can carry kinetic energy through the lattice

• Suppose a human could live 2h unclothed in air at 45 F. How long

could he live in water at 45 F?
Convection
• Convection is the process by which heat is transmitted from one place
to another by the movement of heated particles of a gas or liquid.
• Movement of molecules within
fluids

• Convection currents are set up

much faster in gases than in liquids
because of low cohesive forces
existing between the molecules of
the gases
Concept on ventilation
Applications of convection
Radiation
• Radiation is the method of heat transfer that does not require any
medium

• Heat transmits energy in the form of waves
