Introduction
KAYLA: Reacting to developmental
issues (2 mins)
Intervention 1 (3 mins)
• What is it? Teacher based intervention.
• What would it look like? Teacher catches up with Kayla 1-1 because
she is has been identified as an at risk student. This is part of a
larger program that seeks to check in with all year 7 students.
Firstly, the teacher conducts a working memory test to address
Kayla’s cognitive developmental issues. The teacher then conducts
a student evaluation with Kayla to categorise her developmental
issues – physical development, social development, moral
development
• How does it help Kayla? Targets Cognitive Development, seeks
remedies and recommendations to the physical, social and moral
developmental issues.
• Supporting research? Karcher, Axford, Mulryan-Ryan)
KAYLA: Reacting to Intervention 1
(3mins)
• Benefits include that it is a student-centred approach.
The teacher is providing Kayla with an opportunity to
be vulnerable and seek help. It’s building quality
rapport with students. Furthermore, it is equipping and
empowering Kayla to identify areas of strengths and
weaknesses and to set achievable and realistic goals. It
also equips teachers to provide and enforce
recommendations to better support Kayla.
• Limitations include the approach may make Kayla feel
isolated or targeted by the teachers. It could
disempower her and further disengaged.
Intervention 2 (3 mins)
• What is it? Teacher led, school based intervention.
• What would it look like? It’s a program conditional on Kayla’s
attendance to a local art gallery where she volunteers her time in
exchange for a small wage and exposure to art production.
• How does it help Kayla? Kayla is an at risk student and this is a
strengths based approach. Because Kayla loves art it’s important
that she is placed in an environment where she can be exposed to
successful artists and have opportunities provided where she
herself can succeed. This along with the small wage is offered as an
incentive to encourage and motivate Kayla to persevere and persist
despite physical, cognitive and moral developmental issues. It also
proves to occupy her after school time so she is not harassed or
pursured by older male peers.

KAYLA: reacting to intervention 2 (3
mins)
• Benefits include that it is an official and formal
offer from an institution so it cannot be easily
withdrawn. Furthermore, it is a strengths based
approach. Kayla shows strength in visual arts and
wants to pursue it at university. Therefore
providing her with an opportunity could prove to
be helpful in allowing her to pursue her passions.
• Limitations is that it involves financial aid which
can sometimes be withdrawn. This approach
does not easily target the physical developmental
issues.
