EXTENSIVE READING
EXTENSIVE READING
• Longer text.
• Journals articles, mechanical reports, essays,
etc.
• Mostly focus on meaning using top-down
process, with only occasional use of bottom-
up strategy.
• The expected responses from the readers
involve written (sometimes oral) performance
as reading.
Text that can be applied in extensive
reading.
• Impromptu reading plus comprehension
questions.
• Short-answer tasks.
• Editing.
• Scannng.
• Ordering.
• Information transfer.
• interpretation
SKIMMING TASKS
• The process of rapid coverage of reading matter
to determine its gist or main idea.
• Its a prediction strategy used to give a reader
1. a sense of topic and purpose of text,
2. the organization of the text,
3. the perspective or point of view of the writer,
4. its case or difficulty and its usefulness of the
reader.
SKIMMING TASKS
• The test takers skim the text and answer the
following questions.
1. What is the main idea of the text?
2. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
3. What kind of writing is this? (expository,
technical, narrative, etc)
4. How easy or difficult do this text will be?
5. What do you think you will learn from this text?
6. How usefulness will the text be for your
(profession, academic needs, interest)?
SUMMARIZING & RESPONDING
1. Summarizing : require a synopsis or overview
of the text.
2. Responding : readers provide his/her opinion
about the text.
DIRECTIONS FOR SUMMARIZING
Write a summary of the text. Your summary
should be about one paragraph in length (100-
150 words) and should include your
understanding of the main ideas and
supporting ideas.
EVALUATING SUMMARY
1. Express accurately the main idea and
supporting ideas.
2. Is written in the student’s own words;
occasional vocabulary from the original text
is acceptable.
3. Logically organized.
4. Displays facility in the use of language to
clearly express ideas in the text.
DIRECTION FOR RESPONDING
In this article “ Poisoning the Air We Breathe”,
the author suggest that a global dependence
on fossil fuels will eventually make air in large
city toxic. Write an essay in which you agree or
disagree with the author’s thesis. Support
your opinion with information from the article
and from your own experience.
SCORING RESPONDING
• Good responds should include accurate
reflection of the contents of the articles and
some arguments in that place.
• Difficult because of the subjectivity of
determining an accurate reflection of the text
itself.

0 demonstrate no comprehension of main &
supporting ideas.
NOTE TAKING & OUTLINING
• Fall in informal assessment category.
• Their usefulness is in the strategic training that
learners gain in retaining the information
through marginal notes that highlight key
information or organizational outlines that put
supporting ideas into a visually manageable
framework.
