WHOLE PERSON
DEVELOPMENT
HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
• Is a relatively new movement, which began talking
form as a identifiable are of study and practice in the
mid- 1980s in North America.
MIND AND BODY DUALISM
• Rene Descartes, influenced much of man kind’s thinking with his
theory of duality or understanding the nature of things in simple,
dual mode.
• Hence, you are familiar with the separation of the body in spirit in
western religion, and of the mind and body in the study of human
science
• More example is Yin and Yang. This is contrary to what eastern
philosophers understand it to be that there is dynamism between
two forces in nature.
HOLISM AND GESTALT
• Gen. Jan C. Smuts introduced the academic terminology for
holism as “Tendency in nature to form wholes which are greater
than the sum of its parts”.
• Christian Von Ehrehfels introduced the concept of gestalt. This is
defined by Merriam Webster as “Something is made up of many
parts yet is somehow more than or different from the
combination of its parts; broadly, the general quality, or
character of something.
• In understanding humans, it is important to see the person in his
entirety and not just his parts.
