HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
• Is a relatively new movement, which began talking
form as a identifiable are of study and practice in the
mid- 1980s in North America.
MIND AND BODY DUALISM
• Rene Descartes, influenced much of man kind’s thinking with his
theory of duality or understanding the nature of things in simple,
dual mode.
• Hence, you are familiar with the separation of the body in spirit in
western religion, and of the mind and body in the study of human
science
• More example is Yin and Yang. This is contrary to what eastern
philosophers understand it to be that there is dynamism between
two forces in nature.
HOLISM AND GESTALT
• Gen. Jan C. Smuts introduced the academic terminology for
holism as “Tendency in nature to form wholes which are greater
than the sum of its parts”.
• Christian Von Ehrehfels introduced the concept of gestalt. This is
defined by Merriam Webster as “Something is made up of many
parts yet is somehow more than or different from the
combination of its parts; broadly, the general quality, or
character of something.
• In understanding humans, it is important to see the person in his
entirety and not just his parts.

• The attribute of a person’s consciousness and beliefs,
including the values and virtues that guide and put
meaning into a person’s life.
BASIC DRIVES AND AFFECT
FEELINGS, MOODS, AND EMOTIONS

• Feelings, moods, and emotions do not exactly mean one at


the same time.
• Feelings – Is the compass of purpose action and it always occurs in
relation to what is presently happening.
• Moods – when an emotion is sustained for a period of time, we call
it “mood”.
• Emotions – is the fuel of purposeful action and it arises naturally as
a reaction between the body and mind.

Shalom H. Schwartz – a psycologist and cross-cultural researcher from the Hebrew


University of Jerusalem, conducted a research which covered many different many
different peoples and cultures to identify the 10 common values people have.
1. Self – Direction 6. Security
2. Stimulation 7. Conformity
3. Hedonism 8. Tradition
4. Achievement 9. Benevolence
5. Power 10. Universalism
SELF – DIRECTION
•Independent thought and action;
choosing, creating and exploring.
STIMULATION
•Excitement, novelty, and challenge
in life.
HEDONISM
•Pleasure and sensuous gratification
for oneself.
ACHIEVEMENT
•Personal success through
demonstrating competence
according to social standards.
POWER
•Social status and prestige, and
control.
SECURITY
•Safety, harmony, and stability pf
society, of relationships, and of self.
CONFORMITY
•Restraint of actions, inclinations, and
impulse that are likely to upset that are
likely to upset others and violate
social expectations or norms
TRADITION
•Respect, commitment, and acceptance
of the customs and ideas that
traditional culture or religion provide
the self
BENEVOLENCE
•Preserving and enhancing the welfare
of those with whom one is in frequent
culture or religion provide the self
UNIVERSALISM
• Understanding, appreciation, tolerance,
and protection for the welfare of all people
and of nature

ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOR

• Attitudes – is a person’s mental outlook, which


defines the way we think or feel anything

• Behavior – can be described as the way of


conducting oneself.
VALUES AND VIRTUES

• Values – refers to a culturally or organisationally


accepted.

• Virtues – is a characteristics of a person which


supports individual moral excellence and
collective well being.

• Robert L. Dilenschneider, founder of Dilenschneider Group.
In an article he wrote for Huffington Post titled “Five Core
Values” for the Workplace, Dilenscheider listed the following
corporate values:
• Integrity
• Accountability
• Diligence
• Perseverance
• Discipline
