DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT

OBJECTIVE

To provide Roof Bolt Operators, Supervisors and Machine Operators with guide lines to be
followed to ensure that support in development ends is installed in a safe , efficient and effective
manner.

5.3.1 ROOF BOLTED ENDS

1. The end to be bolted will be barred by the scaler before roof bolting is commenced.

2. Position of required bolts will be marked off by the Team Supervisor and the Developer.

3. Where obvious slips, faults or dykes are exposed by development, additional bolts will be
installed 50cm on either side of disturbance at 1,5m centres - staggered.

4. All rebar installed in the development will be full column resined bolts.

5. The quantity of capsules and colour codes to be used will be as follows :

2,0 m x 20 mm Rebar 1 Red and 4 Yellow capsules.

2,2 m x 20 mm Rebar 1 Red and 4 Yellow capsules.
2,4 m x 20 mm Rebar 1 Red and 5 Yellow capsules.
( Colour codes represent setting time of resin. )

Example : Fast - Red - 30 Seconds - Spin 10 seconds Hold 30 seconds - Tighten.

Slow - Yellow - 10 minutes - Spin 20 seconds Hold 20 seconds - Tighten.

Setting complete 10 minutes.

6. In areas where long anchors will be installed, the rebar pattern will be maintained and the
rebar will be installed before installation of the long anchors is commenced.

7. Random and regular pull tests will be conducted to check on the quality and effectiveness of
installed rock bolts. This will be done by the Rock Mechanics Department at intervals not
exceeding one month.

5.3.1 ROOF BOLTED ENDS

8. Once roof bolting of a development end has been completed - the end will be examined by
the Developer before it is marked off for drilling.

9. The Developer / Development Team Supervisor will ensure that the pattern of roof bolting is
in accordance with standard distance by painting lines through roof bolt rows from grade line
to grade line on either sidewall of the development end.

10. Roof bolts will be maintained at a distance to face of less than 5,0m at all main development
ends.
5.3.2 ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Where in the opinion of the Rock Mechanics Officer, Business Area Manager or Mine
Overseer , it is required to install an additional type of support the system used will be :

a. Wire mesh and lacing and RSJ sets.

b. Additional long anchors.
c. Strapping.

The density and type of support required in such areas will be determined by the Rock
Mechanics department and communicated in writing with a specific layout. The Mine
Overseer will determine the method to be employed to install this support and specific
written instructions will be given to the persons engaged in this task. The Supervisor in
charge will acknowledge instructions by signing for them.

5.3.3 RAISE DEVELOPMENT

1. Before drilling commences in any raise it will be examined and two camlock props will be
installed at 1,5 m and 3,0 m from the face to be drilled.

2. The props will remain in position until all drilling in the raise has been completed.

3. The prop nearest the face will be released remotely prior to the commencement of charging
up by the competent person instructed by the Miner and appointed by the Shift Supervisor
and the Miner in writing to do so.

5.3.3 RAISE DEVELOPMENT ( cont.)

4. The prop furthest from the face will be released remotely after charging up has been
completed. The removal will only be done by appointed competent person.

5. Both props will be stored where they will not be damaged by the blast or scraping operations.

6. The person removing the props will only do so on instructions from the Developer. He will
be trained competent appointed and will examine the area thoroughly before any prop is
removed. Where any deterioration in ground conditions is observed or in any raise / winze
where there are any geological features, the Developer in charge will be present and will
personally direct the prop removal. If this cannot be done in a safe manner the prop will be
left in position. (i.e. not removed).

7. Where split sets are to be installed no props will be removed until split sets have been
installed.

8. Should any slips, faults or other geological feature be exposed in the raise or winze it will be
marked and supported with two split sets not further than 50 cm away from it on either side.

5.3.4 ENLARGEMENT OF ANY EXISTING DEVELOPMENT

1. Mining will notify the Rock Engineering department in writing of any excavation which
is to be enlarged and submit a survey layout. An inspection of the site and an assessment
of the support requirements and recommendations must be made by Rock Engineering
department.

2. The Rock Engineering department must design and specify in writing on the proposed
survey layout the type and density / position of support to be installed before, during and
after the completion of the required layout.

3. Temporary support must be installed for the duration of the operation both in the existing
excavation and the newly mined areas and must not be removed until the recommended
primary support has been completed.
