2. How is the use of biotechnology in the food
sector?

the food sector?
Definition of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a branch of science that studies the use of
living things (bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.) and products from
living things (enzymes, alcohols) in the production process to
produce goods and services. Today, the development of
biotechnology is not only based on biology, but also on other
applied and pure sciences, such as biochemistry, computers,
molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, chemistry,
mathematics, and so on. In other words, biotechnology is an
applied science that combines various branches of science in
the process of producing goods and services.
Benefits of Biotechnology in the Food
Sector
1. Microbial cell technology, for the production of fermented
food and food additives
2. Application of enzymes for food preparation and food
processing
3. Cell culture or tissue of GMO plants and plants
4. Cell culture of transgenic animals and animals
5. Protein engineering

Acar
4.Flavoring products

Tauco Soy sauce

Shrimp paste Vinegar

Impact of the Use of Biotechnology in the
Food Sector
1.Positive impact
• Biotechnology can overcome the lack of food ingredients
(protein and vitamins). With biotechnology, food
ingredients can be produced more quickly without the
need for large space (for example PST).
• Helps overcome health problems by providing medicines
to eradicate disease more cheaply.
• Provides various organic compounds such as alcohol,
acetic acid, sugar, food ingredients, proteins and vitamins.
• Providing energy, such as biogas.
• Improve the environment, such as waste digesting
bacteria.
2.Negative impact
• Making large amounts of tempeh or soy
sauce can cause environmental pollution
• Use of GMO food
