GRAPHING INVERSE FUNCTIONS

Prepared by: Monnalisa A. Gimeno

The graphs of a function and its inverse They are symmetrical in the line 𝒚 = 𝒙

are reflections in the line y = x.

𝒇 𝒙
Example:
3
The graph of f x = 4𝑥 + 2 and its 𝒇−𝟏 𝒙
𝑥 3 −2
inverse 𝑓 −1 𝑥 =
4

The ordered pairs of f are given by the

3
equation f x = 4𝑥 + 2.

The ordered pairs of the inverse are given

𝑥 3 −2
by𝑓 −1 𝑥 = .
4 The graphs of the function and its inverse are
symmetrical.
𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙)
The graph of a
function and its (8,8)
inverse are mirror
images about the line (4,4)

STEPS IN GRAPHING INVERSE
FUNCTIONS

• Remember how to graph basic functions

• Create a table of values of the original function.
• For the inverse function, interchange the table of values of the
original function.
• Plot the points and graph in one cartesian plane.
• Draw the line of symmetry

Restrict domain to x ≥ 0 or 𝒙 ≤ 𝟎
Now function is 1-1 and has an
inverse function
You can make a function 1-1 by
restricting its domain. Such a function
will have an inverse function.

GRAPHING INVERSE FUNCTION

1. Find the inverse and graph them. Proving its one to one and
checking if they are inverse of each other is not necessary.
