DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF WINGTIP DEVICES
Dr. P.A. Aswatha Narayana, ISSN 2278 – 5469 EISSN 2278 –5450

Wingtip vortices are circular patterns of rotating air left behind a wing as it
generates lift. These Wingtip vortices cause wake turbulence, induced drag
and imparts downwash. It reduces lift, increases drag and increases fuel
consumption. To address this problem, wingtip devices are used. Here raked
winglets are studied. From the analysis that the Cl/Cd ratio has increased by
4.33% for a wing with increased span, 6.63% for a wing with winglet and 4.83%
for a wing with raked wingtip. Hence one can conclude that by increasing the
span the aerodynamic efficiency increases and it can be further increased by
adding a wingtip devices. Even though the percentage increase in
aerodynamic efficiency is higher for a winglet they generate additional
interference drag.

In this research work the influence of Reynolds numbers for two different
wingtip configurations (such as, sweptback tapered wingtip and the
single slotted raked wingtip) were investigated at different angles of
attack by using the numerical simulations in FLUENT.
Based on the present study, it is concluded that, the effects of Reynolds
numbers on the aerodynamic characteristics are found at higher angles of
attack but not at lower angles of attack. The increase in aerodynamic
efficiency is more for single slotted raked wingtip as compared to
sweptback tapered wingtip, which ultimately leads to reduction of induced
drag. For further investigations, it would be very helpful to investigate its
impact on the very low Reynolds numbers and compressible flow

In the above mentioned winglets, they all seem to reduce induced drag
and hence increasing the efficiency of the aircraft. Several winglets were
and following were the conclusions. The Blended wingtips have been
advantageous at take-off conditions.
· Spiroid Winglets show different characteristics than any of the other
winglets and have proved to reduce the induced drag by increasing the lift
curve slope.
· Raked winglet don’t generate lift rather they reduce drag in a special
way, by redirecting wingtip drag farther outboard and aft of the wing and
also redistributes the lift along the wing. The result is that they work very well
in ultra-cruise segments. They don’t depend on wing angle of attack, and
reduce fuel consumption when engine thrust is already set to cruise.
Design of Winglet Device for Aircraft

From the study of different types of winglet devices and

analysis of their contribution in aircraft performance, it is
understood that the winglet is the good technology to improve
the aircraft performance in term of less fuel consumption. The
winglet will reduce the use of aircraft engine at high power so
the engine life will be increased. Winglet will increase the
angle of attack very quickly during tack-off and the aircraft
will reach its altitude faster than aircraft without winglet, thus
will led to used lower engine thrust which will give the
engines more time live and low maintenance require. The
effect of winglet in terms of fuel consumption due to less
drags on aircraft body. This will make the aircraft use less
fuel, so it will make it can make longer flight range without
need refueling which will be benefit for the aircraft operator

In the present study the computational analysis is carried out on the NACA-
65(3)-218 wing with the objective of reducing the lift induced drag, which
accounts almost 30 – 40% of the total drag produced by the wing.
From the results it is concluded that Rake and L-winglet performs better than
clean winglet at all higher angles of attacks. The Rake winglet performs better
than clean winglet with high L/D ratio of 8 at the angle of attack of 8. And
the L – Winglet performs better than both clean and Rake winglet with the
high L/D ratio of 10 at the angle of attack of 8 and the performance of all the
three wing configuration decreases as the angle of attack increases further
higher from 8 to 16
Induce Drag Reduction of an Airplane Wing
1, Md. Fazle Rabbi, 2, Rajesh Nandi, 3, Mohammad Mashud ISSN 2349-6193

This work describes the aerodynamic characteristics for aircraft wing model
with and without slotted winglet. i) Aerodynamic characteristics for the
aircraft model with NACA wing No. 0012 have been presented, ii) Lift curve
slope increases more with the addition of the slotted winglet and at the
same time the drag decreases more for the aircraft model with slotted
winglet giving an edge over the aircraft model without winglet as far as L/D
for the slotted winglet is considered, iii) Slotted winglet of
configuration1(winglet inclination 30˚) has, overall, the best performance,
giving about 10-20% increase in lift 20-25% reduction in drag as compared
to without winglet and it is giving the best lift/drag ratio, iv) This winglet
design is capable to reduce induced drag force and convert wing tip
vortices to additional thrust which will save cost by reducing the usage of
fuel, noise level reduction and increase the efficiency of the aircraft
engine.
Computational Investigation of Inviscid Flow
over a Wing With Multiple Winglets ISSN:2393-8447
Multiple winglets configurations reduces the wing
induced drag.
Dihedral spread of the winglets improves lift by taking some
of the winglets away from the wing plane, and redistributing
the tip vortex into multiple vortices that do not merge in the
near wake, thereby reducing the effective downwash at the
wing plane.
