Feasibility Study

• is research, testing and experimentation designed.

• is an analysis of the viability of an idea.

WHY DO FEASIBILITY STUDY
• To find a solution that is cost effective from a business perspective.
• To find a solution that is well recognized.
• To find out the probable market for the products and income of
operating the projects.
• To find out the opportunities and threats as presented by
environment.
• To show the contributions of projects that can offer to the society.
DIMENSIONS OF FEASIBILITY STUDY
MARKET ANALYSIS

• Market research is the systematic gathering, recording and analyzing

of data about problems relating to the market of goods and services.

• Market research is the means by which those who provide goods and
services keep themselves in touch with the needs and wants of those
who buy these goods and services.
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS

• is the process of evaluating businesses, projects, budgets and

other finance-related entities to determine their performance and
suitability.
Technical Analysis

• is a methodology that makes buy and sell decisions using market

statistics. It primarily involves studying charts showing the trading
history and statistics for whatever security is being analyzed.
Economic Analysis

• Is where analysis of project’s cost and revenues in an effort to

determine whether or not it is logical possible to complete.

• It may also be a study of a production process or an industry.

Legal Feasibility

• Is a measure of how well a solution can be implemented within

existing legal/contractual obligation.

• It may include study concerning contracts, liability, violations, and

other legal traps frequently unknown to the technical staff.

• e.g. a data processing system must comply with the local data
protection Acts
Cultural Analysis

• In this stage, the project’s alternatives are evaluated for their impact
on the local and general culture.

• e.g. environmental factors need to be considered and this factors are

to be well known. Further an enterprise’s own culture can clash with
the result of the project.
BENEFITS OF CONDUCTING A FEASIBILITY
STUDY
• Narrows the business alternatives.

• Gives project teams more focus and provides an alternative outline.

• Identifies a valid reason to undertake the project.

• Aids decision-making in the project.

• Enhance the success rate by evaluating multiple parameters.

Hydro Electric Power Plant Feasibility
• This feasibility study contains an estimation of design flow.
• Determination of power potential for a range of dam or weir heights
and installed capacities for project optimization.
• Design of all structures in sufficient detail.
• Determination of the diversion structures dimensions and project
schedule.
• Optimization of the project layout, water levels and components.
• Production of a detailed cost estimate.
• Economic and financial evaluation of the project along with a
feasibility report.
• Accurate flow estimates are a vital part of hydropower feasibility study
because they form the basis of the performance
and income predictions for the hydro system and are a key element
when specifying the most appropriate hydro turbine.
The hydropower feasibility study can be broken down
into the following sections

• Site survey and resource analysis

• Analysis and modelling
• Performance, financial analysis and recommendation
• Full hydropower feasibility price
Site survey and resource analysis
Hydropower systems have to be ‘bespoke designed’ to fit into a site,
rather than onto a site as is the case with wind turbines.

A key element of the hydro site survey is to get a good understanding of

the layout of the weir(s), channels, sluices and surrounding buildings so
that some initial options for locating the hydro system can be discussed
with the client.
Accurate flow estimates are a vital
part of our hydropower feasibility
study because they form the basis
of the performance
and income predictions for the
hydro system and are a key
element when specifying the most
appropriate hydro turbine.
Analysis and modelling
• Once the hydro turbine has been
specified in the hydropower
feasibility study it can then specify
the most appropriate drive system
(belt, gearbox or directly-coupled)
and the generator and control
system.

• e.g. Crossflow turbine, Kaplan turbine

Hydro system sizing
• It is important that both the best type of hydro turbine
is specified for the combination of head and flow at
the site and also that its maximum flow rate and flow
operating range are selected to maximize energy
generation, and therefore income.
FLOW DURATION CURVE WITH OPERATING FLOW BOUDERIES OF HYDRO TURBINE (SHADED)
Performance, financial analysis and
recommendations
• The flow and head duration data for the site is the foundation, and
then the selected hardware is added to this to build a complete
mathematical model of the proposed hydro system.
• The modelling not only takes into account changes in head across the
system due to upstream and downstream water level changes, but
also calculates the head losses in all components in-between
depending on the flow rate and power output. Added to this the
efficiency of the turbine, drive system and generator are calculated
independently depending on the load. The end result is a performance
prediction that is remarkably close to real-world operating experience.
Full hydropower feasibility price
• The price varies depending on the expected maximum power output
of the finished system:

• Less than 100 kW ₱208511

• 100 – 250 kW ₱242141
• 250 – 500 kW ₱316129
