PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

AND STATEMENT OF
HYPOTHESIS
LESSON 3
Research Topic
• A research topic must be brief, concise, and limited.
• It must test the existence or non-existence of a
relationship between variables.
• It can be further limited by identifying the subject
institution, research locale, and respondents that are
probable resources of primary data through survey
questionnaire or interview questions and by involving two
variables.
Factors to consider in choosing a topic:
1. It is important to identify general subjects that indicate
broad topics.
2. As you decide tackling your chosen subject, you need to
consider the importance and interest of the subject to
you and to others.
Note:
It is very important that all these factors are present:
importance and interest, availability of resources and manageability
of resources.
What are the characteristics of a good
research topic?
• A good research topic is direct, brief and concise.

• Ideally, it should only contain about 14 to 18 characters

with variables clearly stipulated, wether your study is
univariate or bivariate/multivariate.
What are some examples of narrowed-
down research topics?
1. Family Background and Academic Performance of Junior
High School Students.
2. Heredity and Food Intake and Dysmenorrheal Discomfort.
3. Library Services and Frequency Of Visits of Clients.
4. Video Games and behavior of Young Male Students.
5. Moral Issues and Exploitation of Women in Liquor
Advertisements.
6. Community Extension Immersion Experiences and Values
Infusion among Students.

How do we differentiate independent and
dependent variable?
• The predictor variable or independent variable exerts
influence or explain the level of the criterion variable or
dependent variable which is to be estimated.
• dependent variable-is an output or behavior that has to be
established as to its relationship with the independent
variable.
• Independent variable - is the cause, and the dependent
variable is the effect.
