Acid Rain
• Acid rain refers to a mixture of deposited material, both wet
and dry, coming from the atmosphere containing more than
normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. Rain that is acidic
in nature due to the presence of pollutants in the air due to
cars and industrial processes. It is defined as rain, fog, sleet or
snow that has been acidic by pollutants in the air as a result of
fossil fuel and industrial combustions that mostly emits
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).When these
gases react with water molecules and oxygen among other
chemicals found in the atmosphere, acid rain is formed.
• Acid rain generally leads to weathering of buildings, corrosion
of metals, and peeling of paints on surfaces. It may also lead to
poisoning of aquatic animals, affects the plant’s growth as it
lessen the fertility of soil.
Effects of Acid Rain
Peeling of paints
Poisoning of aquatic animals
Corrosion of metals
Global Warming
• Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual
increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s
atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be
permanently changing the Earth’s climate. The increased
volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
released by burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture,
and other human activities, are believed to be the primary
sources of the global warming.
• Changes resulting from global warming may include rising
sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps, as well as
an increase in occurrence and severity of storms and other
severe weather events.
Effects of Global Warming
1. What changes in the environment is
illustrated in each picture?
2. What are the bad effects brought
about by ozone depletion, acid rain and
global warming in the environment?
3. What are the causes of these
changes in the environment?
Do this! These are some bad effects of
certain changes in the environment.
Rearrange them to come up with the
answer.
1. BALLOG WINGRAM
2. DIAC NIRA
3. NOBRACOROUL FLOROCH
4. ZEONO LETIONDEP
•What are the effects brought
about by the changes in the
environment?
• How can you help reduce the bad
effects of some changes in the
environment?
•Identify the bad effects of the following changes in
the environment.
________________ 1. Burning diesel and gasoline oil in cars.
_________________ 2. Rusting of iron
__________________3. Shaping some plastics and metals into new
products.
__________________4. Burning leaves and plastics.
__________________5. Producing air conditioners and refrigerators.
•Assignment:
List down at least five conditions/
activities that may help minimize
the bad effects of some changes in
the environment.
