 Showing the nature and prevalence of

GBV at global, national, regional and
zonal level.
What is Gender Based Violence?
 GBV – is any act of violence that results in, or is
likely to result in;-

- physical, sexual, and psychological abuse:

-threats, coercion, arbitrary deprivation of liberty,
and economic deprivation whether occurring in
public or private life.

 is a widespread human rights violation

transcending geography, race, class, sexuality,
ethnicity and religion.

i.e Is a problem that touch every community in

every corner of the globe
 Types of GBV
Gender-based violence can take the forms/types
of ;-
● Sexual violence:
-rape, sexual assault,
-sexual harassment/ጾታዊ ትንኮሳ

● Physical violence:
-hitting/battering,
-slapping,
- beating

-psychological abuse;
-insults, humiliation
● Economic violence:
-denial of resources
● Harmful traditional practices: that includes;
-early marriage/ያለዕድሜ ጋብቻ
-forced marriage,
-female genital mutilation/FGM/የሴትልጅ

According to (World Bank 2019);
Gender-based violence affects;-
 1 in 3 women in their lifetime

The numbers are staggering/overwhelming;
 35% of women world wide have experienced
either physical and/or sexual intimate partner
violence or non-partner sexual violence.
Globally, 7% of women have been sexually
assaulted by someone other than a partner.
38 % 0f murders of women are committed by an
intimate partner.
 200 million women have experienced female
genital mutilation/cutting/ለሴትልጅ ግርዛት

 This issue is not only devastating for survivors of
violence and their families, but also entails
significant social and economic costs.

 In some countries, violence against women is

estimated to cost countries up to 3.7% of their
GDP – more than double what most governments
spend on education(World Bank 2019).

 Violence studies by WHO (2013) from 86
countries ;
 across regions of Africa,
 the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean,
 Europe, South-East Asia and the Western
Pacific, show that;-

 -up to 68 % of women have experienced

physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime
from an intimate partner.
 The highest prevalence rates were found in
central Sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated
up to 66% of ever-partnered women having
experienced physical and/or sexual violence by
an intimate partner.

 According to the World Health Organization
(2013),

 Globally, 1 in every 3 women has been beaten,

coerced into sex or abused in some other way.
 Another report from 2014 claims that
- 1 in 5 women is sexually abused as a child.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

(2012) report showed that;-
 women and girls represented 55% of the
estimated 20.9 million victims of forced labor
worldwide, and
 98% of the estimated 4.5 million forced into
sexual exploitation.
Prevalence of GBV in Ethiopia

 A 2011 survey by the Ministry of Women,

Children, and Youth Affairs (MoWCYA) found
that ;
in 4,617 reported cases of economic violence,
- divorce women were denied their share of
property and their custody of children.
 The study also found 8,655 reported cases of
- wife beating, physical violence against women
and girls, and abduction of girls.

 Another 404 reported cases involved rape and
attempted rape.
Evidence from different community based studies
also indicated that;
-50% to 60% of women experienced violence
in their life time and
- sexual violence is reported to occur more than
physical violence while the perpetrators are mainly
intimate partners and close family members(Gossay
etal 2003).

 59 % of women in Ethiopia reported that they face sexual

violence by a partner.
 46% of the women where physically forced to have a sex
 71% of women face either sexual or psychological
violence at some points in their lives(Garcia 2006)

A school based study conducted on selected 1,401
female high school students in central Ethiopia also
showed that ;-

 sexual harassment was reported by 74% of the

participant female students

 about 85% of the reported rape survivors were

under 18 years of age
Prevalence of GBV in North
Showa Zone

 As is the case in different parts of the country;

-GBV is widespread in all woredas of the zone.
