How do you determine the
number of factors of a given
number?
• 1. Think of each number as a product of two
factors. Factors are numbers multiplied to get a
product.
• 2. Write the number as a product of two factors.
• 3. List down the factors of the number.
Study the table:

• Notice that 17 and 11 have 2 factors each.
The factors of 17 are 17 and 1. 17 can be
divided exactly by itself and 1. The factors
of 11 are 1 and 11. 11 can be divided
exactly by itself and 1.
• Notice that 40 and 18 have more than 2
factors each. The factors of 40 are
1,2,4,5,8,10,20 and 40. The factors of 18
are 1,2,3,6,9 and 18.
Use the factor tree in finding the factors of a number
Example 1
Write 56 as a product of its prime factors.
List the first few prime
numbers:
56

2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19... a factor of 56 so 2 is a
