Project Management

The supervision and control of the work required to

complete the project vision. The project team carries out the
work needed to complete the project, while the project
manager schedules, monitors, and controls the various
project tasks. Projects, being temporary and unique things
that they are, require the project manager to be actively
involved with the project implementation

Project management is comprised of the following nine knowledge areas:

· Project Integration Management: This knowledge area focuses on project plan and execution

· Project Scope Management: This knowledge area deals with the planning, creation, protection, and
fulfillment of the project scope.

· Project Time Management: This management is crucial to project success. This knowledge area
covers activities, their characteristics, and how they fit into the project schedule.

· Project Cost Management: Cost is always a constraint in project management. This knowledge area is
concerned with planning, estimating, budgeting, and control of costs.

· Project Quality Management: This knowledge area centers on quality planning, assurance, and
control.

· Project Human Resource Management: This knowledge area focuses on organizational planning, staff
acquisition, and team development.

· Project Communications Management: The majority of a project manager’s time is spent

communicating. This knowledge area details how communications can improve.

· Project Risk Management: Every project has risks. This knowledge area focuses on risk planning,
analysis, monitoring, and control.

Project Procurement Management: This knowledge area involves planning, solicitation, contract
administration, and contract closeout.

Work Breakdown structure

A set of work packages when completed, complete a

higher level task in the hierarchy. A set of level 3 tasks

when completed, complete a level 2 task and so on.

Project is completed when all level 1 tasks are

completed.

• The structure of WBS resembles the organization

chart. However it is entirely different from

organization chart.

• The organization chart depicts the hierarchy of the

personnel whereas the WBS is a technique of grouping

the tasks needed for a project.

Basic rules in developing project network

1. Network typically flows from left to right

2. An activity can not begin unless all preceding
connected activities are completed
3. Looping is not allowed
4. Conditional activities are not allowed
5. An activity is represented by a single arrow
6. A pair of events can not be connected by more
than one activity
7. There must be a single start and single end

Terminology

1. Activity : a homogeneous element of work

consuming some resources and requiring some
amount of time for its completion

1. Event : start or end of an activity

• Simple event
• Merge event
• Burst event
• Combined merge and burst event

Information required for drawing a network

1. Project activities
2. Activity interdependence
3. Time estimates
