Past Simple Tense 1

Past Simple – spelling of regular


verbs
 The normal rule is to add -
ed.
Worked – started – walked -
2) If the verbs ends in -e, add -
d.
Lived – loved – changed –
agreed – arrived – danced
3)Verbs that end in consonant
+ -y change to -ied.
Carry = carried cry = cried
4) If the verbs has only one
syllable and one vowel and
one consonant, double the
consonant.

Stopped – planned – admitted


– conferred

5)When the verbs not ends in -


e, add -ed.

Enjoy – enjoyed – listen –


listened – play - played
6)When the verbs ends
in -ic, add -k followed
– ed.

Panic = panicked
traffic = trafficked

Use
1) The Past Simple expresses a past action that is
now finished.
We played tennis last Sunday.
I worked in Tokyo from 1994 to 1999.
John left two minutes ago.
2) Notice the time expressions that are used with
the past simple.

 We use did in past simple


negative and questions.
 I clean my teeth every morning. This morning I
cleaned my teeth.

 Terry worked in a bank from 1981 to 1986.

 Yesterday it rained all morning. It stopped at


lunchtime.

 We enjoyed the party last night. We danced a


lot and talked to a lot of people. The party
finished at midnight.
The Past Simple Tense:
irregular verbs
 Note: Irregular verbs
don't end in ED in the
past tense.
 Some verbs are
irregular. The past
simple is not -ed.
