Divide 15360 by 3 using long division.
Steps in dividing a polynomial P(x) by
a binomial D(x) using Long Method
1. Make sure that the polynomial P(x) is written in Standard
Form.
2. Set up the division. Insert 0𝑥 𝑛 for every missing term.
3. Divide the first term of the dividend, P(x) by the first term
of the divisor, D(x). Write the answer over the 2nd term of
the dividend.
4. Multiply the answer from step 3 to the divisor. Write the
answers under the 1st and 2nd term respectively.
5. Subtract the second line from the first line.
6. Repeat step 3 to 5, until the last term is brought down.
(if the last line is 0, then there is no remainder.)
Division Algorithm:

𝑷(𝒙) 𝑹(𝒙)
=𝑸 𝒙 +
𝑫(𝒙) 𝑫(𝒙)
Perform the indicated division and write your
𝑷(𝒙) 𝑹(𝒙)
answer in the form: 𝑫(𝒙) = 𝑸 𝒙 + 𝑫(𝒙)

(12x3 + 2 + 11x + 20x2) ÷ (2x + 1)

(11x + 20x2 + 12x3 + 2) ÷ (3x + 2)
Polynomials in real-life situations
Nina wants to install floor tiles beneath the sea floor
of Laguna Lake but she needs the dimension of the
lake before purchasing the floor tiles, but the only
information she has, which she got from the
barangay officials, is the area of the sea floor which
is approximately 2𝑥 3 + 7𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 8, and the
estimated width of the lake which is 𝑥 + 2, what do
you think is the length of the lake?
