CULTUR

– Culture is a term that refers to a large and diverse

set of mostly intangible aspects of social life.
According to sociologists, culture consists of the
values, beliefs, systems of language and
communication, and practices that people share
in common and that can be used to define them
as a collective. Culture also includes the material
objects that are common to that group or
society.
– Culture is the beliefs, behaviors, objects,
and other characteristics shared by groups
of people.

– It can also demonstrate the way a group

thinks, their practices, or behavioral
patterns, or their views of the world.
– The word "culture" derives from a French term,
which in turn derives from the Latin "colere,"
which means to tend to the earth and grow, or
cultivation and nurture. "It shares its etymology
with a number of other words related to actively
fostering growth," De Rossi said.

– Living abroad does not only require learning a
new language, but also adapting to a foreign
culture. Each culture have its customs and
traditions which can be very different- even
shocking- from your own culture.
EXAMPLES:
– Italians are very superstitious and for
them, nuns and ambulances are associated
with death. So if you plan to spend your
holidays in ITALY and you bump into one of
them, don’t hesitate and bless yourself
with the sign of the Cross
– In some ASIAN COUNTRIES such as China,
Korea or Japan, a sign of approval and
appreciation of someone’s cooking is to
slurp the soup loudly - what is considered
rude in most western countries.

culturally-based variations among
speakers of the same language.
Globalization and Advancing

natural and technological environment can

– One must take care not to assume that the view held in
one's own culture is universal on such issues as
educational values, class structure and social mobility,
job status and economic stratification, religious ties,
political affiliation, gender differences, racism and other
prejudices, attitudes toward work, and recreational or
work institutions.
Conceptions of Authority

– Different cultures often view the distribution of

authority in their society differently. Views of
authority in a given society affect communication
significantly, since they shape the view of how a
message will be received based on the relative
status or rank of the message's sender to its
receiver.
Nonverbal Communication
– Knowledge of a culture conveyed through what a
person says represents only a portion of what that
person has communicated. Indeed, body
