Renewable Energy
 Renewable energy is energy produced from sources that do not
deplete or can be replenished within a human life.

Ø Most renewable energies are derived from the sun directly or

indirectly. Solar, wind, biomass, tidal, geothermal, hydro etc are
common forms of renewable energies.

 Currently 19.3% of the world’s total energy is being supplied

from renewable energies and 22% of the total world electricity
generation.

 Renewable energy systems produce less greenhouse emissions

than fossil fuel energy systems.

Integrated Renewable Energy
• The process of power transfer from renewable energy source to
the utility system grid.
• Focuses on incorporating renewable energy, distributed
generation, energy storage, thermally activated technologies
and demand response into the electric distribution and
transmission system.
• The goal of renewable energy integration is :
- Reduce carbon emissions and emissions of other
air pollutants .
- Increase asset use through integration of distributed systems.
- lower the costs of electricity.
- Support energy efficiency.
The electricity grid is a complex and incredibly
important and impressive engineering feats .
The grid consists of three main sections – electricity
generation, transmission and distribution.
Generation: Begins in power plants. Generally uses
fossil fuels to produce electricity.
Present Transmission: Transports
Electricity Grid electricity using transformers, substations and power
lines. Generally Voltage is stepped up for
transmission. HVDC is new trend.
Distribution: These networks start at the
transformers and end with homes, schools and
businesses etc. etc...The distribution grid mainly
connects the substations to the consumers.

Future grid with high
level of Renewables
• Globally, the world produced
approximately 5.9 TWh of modern
renewable energy in 2016. This
represents a 5 to 6-fold increase since the
1960s.
• According to BP by 2040, renewables will
grow by 400 percent of their current
amount.
• Journal Joule predicting entire systems
can run on near 100% renewable power
by 2050.
 Large conventional hydropower
projects currently provide the
majority of renewable electric
power generations with nearly 1100
GW of global capacity.
 hydropower produced an estimated
4100-terawatt hours (TWh) of the
24,659 Twh total global electricity in
2016.
 Wind power produced more than 3
percent of global electricity in 2016
with 487 GW of global capacity. It
stands second.

and widespread, and they can be
harnessed anywhere that receives
sunlight.
 Globally in 2016, traditional
Sources availability biomass accounted for about 9.1
percent of total energy
consumption.
