To make a positive Simple Present statement, simply
follow this pattern:

Simple present tense is used for the
following reasons:
1. Things that are true in general.

• Cheetah is the fastest land animal.

• Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of
vitamins.
• Mr. Jackson lives alone.
2. For habits or for things that happen sometimes or
all the time.
The following adverbs are commonly used
for simple present tense:

• I sometimes skip breakfast.

• She goes to school late.
• Mr. and Mrs. Jones always visit their grandchildren.

Simple Past Tense
The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk
about things that happened or existed before now.
Imagine someone asks what your brother Wolfgang
did while he was in town last weekend.

Example:
Wolfgang entered a hula hoop contest.
He won the silver medal.
Change the sentences to PAST TIME. Use a
simple past verb.

PRESENT PAST
Every day Yesterday
Every morning Yesterday morning
Every afternoon Yesterday afternoon
Every night Last night
Every year Last year
EXAMPLES.
1. I walk to my office every morning
→ I walked to my office yesterday.

2. I talk to my parents on the phone every week.

→ I talked to my parents on the phone yesterday.

3. The post office opens at eight o’clock every morning.

→ The post office opened at eight o’clock every morning.
How to Formulate the Simple Past?
For regular verbs, add -ed to the root form of the verb (or just -
d if the root form already ends in an e)

Play Played
Type Typed
Listen Listened
For irregular verbs, things get more complicated. The simple past tense of
some irregular verbs looks exactly like the root form:
Put Put
Cut Cut
Cost Cost

For other irregular verbs, including the verb to be, the simple past forms
are more erratic:
See Saw
Do Did
Build Built
The good news is that verbs in the simple past tense (except for the verb
to be) don’t need to agree in number with their subjects.
• We use future simple to describe an action in the future

Will/Shall
