ELEMENTS SCULPTURE
A strong AXIS
has been
maintained in
the garden of
VAUX-LE-
VICOMTE
which creates
PERSPECTIVE
A perfect SYMMETRY can be found
in the whole garden starting from
the foot of the Chateau to the
Hercules column.

There are identical PARTERRES on

either side of the axis having
geometrical EMBRODERIES made
out of well maintained TOPIARIES.
ANAMORPHOSIS ABSCONDIA (HIDDEN DISTORTION):
•Le Notre employed an optical illusion called ANAMORPHOSIS
ABSCONDIA in VAUX-LE-VICOMTE that creates a FORCED PERSPECTIVE.

•The reflecting pools on either side of the axial aisle are narrower at the
closest point to the viewer (standing on the grand staircase on the rear POOLS
of the chateau) than the farthest point.
Lower level

•As one moves on to explore the garden, it is discovered that the central ovular
pool flanked by GROTTOS is actually CIRCULAR, and the GROTTOS are far away,
separated by a canal.

•It is realized that the garden is larger than it appears.

•The grand sloping lawn begins to appear at the lower level which seemed to be
non existent initially.
Moving on further on the aisle,
a square pool is discovered
surpassing the identical
reflecting pools on either side of
the aisle.

Next comes the canal which

separates the GROTTOS and
NEPTUNE FOUNTAIN from the
rest of the garden.

Inspite of being at the lowest level of the garden, the grottos appear to be
higher because according to EUCLID’S tenth theorem of OPTICS, “the most
distant parts of planes situated below the eye appear to be the most elevated.”
