Description
Remedial education is the supplemental instruction or additional courses connected with school for students who are
slower at learning than others in arrangement with the formal course(Cashdan, Pumfrey, & Lunzer, 2006; Chen, 2007;
Melton, 2008; Panlilio, 2012). It is designed to provide the children who are not able to control the teaching-learning
process in a normal classroom(Selvarajan & Vasanthagumar, 2012)

Implementation
The need for additional education beyond the formal school is suggested one (Melton, 2008) to
enhancing the low achiever.

Researches
It has been adapted and implemented in the field of education proven by numbers of researches existed in many
countries such as Kuwait, India, Philippines, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Gaza, Sweden, and etc.
Each country has an interpretation for remedial to be applied in their education

 Issues Dealing with Remedial Teaching
Implementation
In Indonesia, the implementation is hardly found at schools
This can be happened for various reasons based on the
preliminary observation.
 The lack of awareness of the low achievers’ need
 Time management
 The difficulty on constructing the material (the
teachers are busy to manage their administrative
purposes)
On the contrary, the government discussed in
Permendikbud No.104, 2014 that schools need to implement
remedial teaching if their students do not get the minimum
grade (SKL)

Studies
The quantitative studies regarding remedial are
mostly performed overseas. The reseachers
concern on investigating the relationship or
comparison between two or more variables.
There is limited studies that discussed remedial
teaching or remedial class in Indonesia, specifically
on teaching English since the implementation in
education is also hardly found.
