Introduction
• Employee empowerment is giving employees
a certain degree of autonomy (freedom to
make decisions) and responsibility for decision
making regarding their specific organisational
tasks.
• It allows decisions to be made at lower levels
of an organisation where employees have a
unique view of the issues and problems facing
the organisation at a certain level.
Meaning
Employee empowerment is the process of
enabling or authorizing an individual to think,
behave, take action and control work and
decision making in autonomous way.
DEFINITION
• “Empowerment is the process coming to feel
and behave as if one is in power and to feel as
if they owned the firm’’- Richard Kathnelson
• “Employee empowerment refers to the
management strategies for sharing decision
making power’’- Bowen and Lawler
Importance of Employee
Empowerment
• The empowerment in employees can improve
productivity , which can reduce the cost.
• Individual employees experience a feeling of
self esteem ,self efficiency and self
confidence.
• It allows independent decision making by the
employees.More freedom given to employees
can be utilised for taking important decisions.

be multiplied.
• Assigning proper authority can improve the
organisational effectiveness.
Employee empowerment can be done by:

• Seeking opinions from the employees.


• Facilitating the employees to try their ideas.
• Encouraging them for effective sharing of
resources and information.

1. Enabling the employees to make bigger
decisions without having refer to a senior.
2. Involving the employees to improve the way
things are done.
3. Encouraging employees to play a major
effective role in their work.
CHALLENGES TO EMPLOYEE
EMPOWERMENT
• Giving up control can be threatening to some
managers.
• Managers may not want to share power with
someone they look down upon.
• Managers fear losing their own place and
special privileges in the system.
