Introduction
Smoking is a practice in which a substance (tobacco)
is burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be
tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. It is one of
the leading causes of lung cancer, heart attack, etc. It
is becoming a norm to our society and is common
among teenagers. In MSU-MSAT, some grade 11
students are allegedly known to be smokers,
Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to know and understand

the effects of cigarette smoking to grade 11 students in
MSU-MSAT and what might be the potential factors for
this and also to know how to find the best suitable
solution to end this problem.
Statement of the Problem

The researchers have observed that the number of

grade 11 students in MSU-MSAT who smoke are rising
and the effects that it may have not only to those
students but also to their families and their learning
are potentially adverse.
Significance of the Study
 This will help the students to be aware of the effects of smoking
especially if they started this vice at an early age, and the long term
effects that it have not only to their health but also to their family.
 Through this, parents will be able to understand what the causes and
effects of smoking to their children and in what way they can help
their children in overcoming their smoking addiction.
 Thiswill make the teachers aware of the effects of smoking to their
students so they can be vigilant of any signs that will show any
changes in the students and be hasteful in taking actions to guide the
students to the right way and save them from self-destructing path.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the effects of smoking to grade

11 students in MSU-MSAT and factors why this problem
occur. This study will focus on finding possible
solutions to resolve this problem.
Definition of Terms
 Smoking - a practice in which a substance is burned and the
resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the
bloodstream.
 Tobacco - Tobacco contains the alkaloid nicotine, which is a
stimulant, and harmala alkaloids. Dried tobacco leaves are mainly

Review of Related Literature and Studies
This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and
in-depth search done by the researchers.

According to Fukuda K. et al (1990) high school student smokers are

associated with a friend who smoke which influenced more the students. They
suggest the need for anti-smoking education beginning in a lower grade in
primary school.

Methods and Procedures

The research design is a qualitative research. The method that is used
by the researchers in this study is the explanatory research method.
The researchers chose this method because it is the best method to
use to efficiently convey the research and make it as understandable
as possible for the readers to easily comprehend what this study is all
about.

Findings

Among the 80 respondents, one is 19-20 years old, sixty-five are 17-18
years old and nine is 15-16 years old in terms of age. When it comes to
gender, majority of the respondents are male with a total number of 45
and the minority are female with a number of 35 respondents. In terms of
section, Iris, Lilac, Tulip, Tea Rose and Peony each have thirteen
respondents and fifteen respondents are from Daisy.
Conclusions

1.Most of the grade 11 students smoke to relax and reduce stress that they
have acquired from school.
2.Some students smoke for fun and to show off regardless of the health
risks and dangers that comes with it.
3.Smoking does not only affect the students’ health but also their
academic performance for smoking hinders them to focus on their
studies instead they would prefer smoking than studying which leads to
low grades and tardiness.
Recommendations
The school must enforce actions to enlighten the students of all the risk and
possible effects of smoking to them not only about health but also to their
studies and over-all well-being.

The students must be given time to relax and enjoy school rather than be
bombarded with all the tasks, assignments, requirements, etc. from school
since stress from school is one major factor as to why students smoke. This
way it would minimize the numbers of students that smoke and so is the
possibility of one to smoke.
