Holiday Trading Cards - Assignment

Introduction
• Ms Shoates: Good Morning/Afternoon Class
• We have three weeks remaining before the Winter break.
Therefore, I would like to take a little bit of a break this week from
our regular lesson and work on a special Holiday/Multicultural
lesson that we can all partake in and hopefully enjoy.
• Next week we will resume where we left off and get ready for final
exams.
• In the meantime if anyone feels they need help or have questions
about our regular lesson, I am as always, available at first lunch
and after school until 3pm.
Multicultural
Holidays
Embracing Diversity
Mini Lecture
• Ms. Shoates: Ok, so who can tell me what is meant by
Multicultural?
• Ms. Shoates: What is diversity?
• Student #1: Multicultural means different cultures coming together.
• Student #2: Diversity means everyone is different or different types
of people.
• Ms. Shoates: Those are all very good answers.
• By definition, and I want you to write notes on this….. Multicultural
means: “the presence of, or support for the presence of, several
distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society.”
• Diversity means:
“a range of different things(or people in this case).”
Mini Lecture Cont’d……
• Ms. Shoates: So, now that you know the definitions of Multicultural
and Diversity, what do you think is meant by Multicultural
Holiday(s)?
• Student #3: Different groups of people celebrating the holidays.
• Ms. Shoates: Good job….did everyone hear student #3? He said it
is different groups of people celebrating the holidays.
• Ms. Shoates: Do you think that means that everyone will celebrate
the same way or will they celebrate in the way in which is
recognized in their own group/culture?
• Student #4: Student #4 said they may celebrate Christmas but
they may not celebrate it at all like in her own family who are
Jehovah Witnesses
Mini Lecture Cont’d…….
• Student #5: Ms. Shoates, what is a Jehovah Witness?
• Ms. Shoates: That’s an excellent question student #5. And these
are the kind of things we will learn once we do this project. So I am
going to save that question and it will be answered in your groups.
• Ms. Shoates: Getting back to student #4’s answer……So, in other
words a family may choose to celebrate or not celebrate the
Holidays in a way that is in line with the traditions of their own
culture and/or Religion.
• Ms. Shoates: What we are going to do now is count off starting
with one and ending with the number four. Each person with the
number one will be in group One. The twos will be group
two…….and so on.
Group Instructions:
• All students: Counting off 1…2..3..4….repeat…
• Ms. Shoates: Now that we have our groups selected, I want you to
take a few minutes and break into those groups.
• Ms. Shoates: At this time I want you to select a group captain and
the captain will write down the names of each group member on a
sheet of paper and submit it to me at the end of class.
• Ms. Shoates: In quieter tones please take about ten minutes to get
acquainted with your groups. There should be four…no more than
5 people per group.
Assignment Instructions:
• Ms Shoates: Okay class, let’s settle down so that we can talk
about the assignment. First, does anyone have any questions
about the groups?
• Student #6: yes, what about the people who are absent today? I
think at least two people are absent.
• Ms. Shoates: Yes, that is correct. So, be sure to give me a
complete list of who is in your group at the end of class. That way I
can see which group may be short and add the absent students
where needed.
Assinmegnt Instructions:
• Ms Shoates: Ok students lets get into the assignment
requirements. Take notes on this please. You will get in your
groups (when I tell you) and you will find out what each person
does to celebrate the holidays. Or you may find out that it is a
person in your group’s tradition to not celebrate the holidays…..and
that is ok too. Not everyone does.
• Ms Shoates: One person will write down the information discussed
in your groups.
• Student #7: All of it? Do we have to write down everything that is
said?
• Ms Shoates: Of course not! Just the important points of each
persons traditions.
Assinmegnt Instructions
• Ms Shoates:Then each of you will design a card that we will call a
trading card to trade with one another.
• Student Athlete: So, it is sorta of like trading baseball cards or
something.
• Ms. Shoates: Yes, student athlete, it is just like that. Except each
person will make a card based on their own traditions and then
they will trade that card with someone else in the group.
• At the end of this project on the day its time to present, or actually
before that day, you will select one card from each group and you
will all say at least one or 2 things from that card in front of the
class.
Brief Video on Multicultural Holidays
• Ms. Shoates: I will show you my card in a few minutes. But first I
want you to watch these two short videos about multicultural
videos.

What did you think?
• Ms Shoates: What did you think about the two videos?
• Student #8: I didn’t like the music in the 2nd one but liked the
images in the first one.
• Student #9: I saw some of my family traditions in the video.
• Student #10: My family is Jehovah Witness so I don’t see how any
of this relates to me.
• If it is your family tradition not to celebrate the holidays please see
me after class, after school or before school so that I may offer you
some guidance on how to complete this project.
PUT THE PERSON/
PLACE NAME HERE
• Add a description of the person or place
here. Tell what holiday they are celebrating
• Your description should be in your own
words.
• You should also add a caption for the
image.
• A caption should have all the information
about the picture, where it was taken, who
is in the picture and what the people are
doing.
