PHYSICAL FITNESS

AND SELF-TESTING
ACTIVITIES
WHY IS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
IMPORTANT?
• Regular physical activity provides young people with important physical, mental,
social health benefits

• These includes:
• Healthy growth and development;
• Strong bones and muscle;
• Control of weight and body composition;
• Improved posture;
• Improved cardiovascular health;
• Reduced blood cholesterol;
• Opportunities to make friends and enhance self-esteem;
• Reduced stress, depression and anxiety.
Regular participation in physical activity has other
benefits such as:

• It creates more positive school climate

• Leading to the students being more productive, more
motivated, better organized and more effective in learning
and performing tasks (Kidd 1999) ;
• A decrease in the amount of vandalism, mischief, petty
crime, and other negative behaviors in the community
(Norrie and Mustard 1999);
• Enhancement of social and moral development.
Overweight and Obesity among Children and young
people

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among Australian

children has risen dramatically in recent years. Approximately
20 to 25% of children aged 5-17 are now classified as
overweight or obese. Children and adolescents who are
overweight are more likely to be overweight and obese as
adults. They have an increased risk of heart disease, high
blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, some type of cancer and
gallbladder disease.
WHAT IS PHYSICALLY EDUCATED
PERSON?
An individual who has undergone physical education in the educational ladder
cannot deny the valuable contribution of this area of learning toward his total
development. A physically educated person:
• Understands the potential of physical education activities in the attainment of a
healthy lifestyle and strives to achieve this goal;
• Exercises regularly to develop and maintain his weight and physical fitness;
• Acquires sufficient skills to enable him to participate actively in some form of
recreational games, sports and dances;
• Eats a balanced diet and practices good eating habits;
• Gets adequate sleep and avoids drugs and stimulants that will negatively affect his
total well-being;
• Enjoys participation in a variety of vigorous activities and recreational pursuits; and
• Appreciates good performances in games, sports and dances.
Every individual desires to live a long, healthy and happy life.
Based on clinical and experimental data undertaken in
progressive countries, many people today know how to get
and stay in shape. Physical fitness tests to determine strengths
and weaknesses are available. This knowledge, however, is
not always applied in one’s daily life as there are people
worldwide who take physical activities for granted and
ignore the very elements that contribute to well-being. A
careful study of physical fitness tests prescribed in schools and
their application can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
TWO TYPES OF PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST

• Pre-Test - this test is done at the beginning of the school year which includes
fitness test to determine your fitness status.
• Post-Test – this test is done during the last month of the school year.

The results of both test serves as the basis for providing continuous activities
or trainings in order to maintain one’s fitness.

Body mass index or BMI
• is a measure of body size. It combines a person's weight with their height. The
results of a BMI measurement can give an idea about whether a person has
the correct weight for their height.

they have a healthy weight, excess weight, or obesity. If a person's BMI is
outside of the healthy range, their health risks may increase significantly.
