THE 4 IMPORTANT FEATURES
OF LANGUAGE

FORMALITY
OBJECTIVITY

EXPLICITNESS
CAUTION
FORMALITY
• formality reflects your dignified stance in
your writing as a member of teh academic
community. This means that since your
audience are fellow members of the
academic community, the language you
use requires precision to make it a
“legitimate” piece of academic writing
FORMALITY can be achieved through the
following ways:
• Choosing expanded modal forms over
contracted forms
e.g.
cannot can't
do not don't
• Choosing one verb form over two-word
verbs
e.g
damage mess up
chase run after
• Choosing expanded terms over their
abbreviated equivalents
e.g
as soon as possible ASAP
standard operation procedure SOP
• Avoiding colloquial
e.g
Kinda
gotta go
gonna
OBJECTIVITY
• this meansthat the writing must be
impersonal and maintain a certain level of
social distance
OBJECTIVITY can be achieved through
the following ways:
1. Avoiding the use of personal pronouns such
as you, I, we.

EXAMPLE:
You need to conduct the experiment.
The researchers need to conduct the
experiment.
2. Avoiding rhetorical questions as it marks
“closeness” with the reader and constantly
seeks his/her attention.

EXAMPLE:
How can these problems be solved?
Certain measures must be discovered
to solve the problems.
A rhetorical question is a figure of
speech in the form of a question that is
asked to make a point rather than to elicit
an answer.Though a rhetorical question
does not require a direct answer, in many
cases it may be intended to start a
discussion or at least draw an
acknowledgement that the listener
understands the intended message.
• Is the pope Catholic?
• Is rain wet?
• You didn't think I would say yes to that, did you?
• Do you want to be a failure for the rest of your
life?
• Does a bear poop in the woods?
• Can fish swim?
• Can birds fly?
• Do dogs bark?
3. Avoiding emotive language that
shows biases and lessens objectivity.

EXAMPLES:
The investigators were very
shocked to see the outcome of the test.
the investigators did not expect
the result.
• Emotive language is designed to tell you the
facts while influencing you to adopt the author's
opinion. Here are examples of emotive
language.
Non-emotive version: Another person in the bar
was injured by the man's glass.
Emotive version: An innocent bystander suffered
facial injuries when the thug launched his glass
across the bar.
• Non-emotive version: The government will
reduce interest rates.
• Emotive version: The government will slash
interest rates.
• Non-emotive version: Mr Smith was attacked
by Mr Jones for two minutes.
• Emotive version: For what seemed a lifetime,
Mr Smith was subjected to a vicious, cowardly
assault by the unemployed, steroid-pumped
monster.
Activity
I believe that incidence of drug overdose has
indeed become prevalent nowadays. When people
are faced with difficult problems, I think that they an
no longer bear the problem and that is why they get
into drugs. That's why if you are a psychologist, you
should treat your patients in a way that helps them
to understand their problems and ways to deal with
them. Yeah I know it can be very difficult but hey,
that's what you specialized in, right?
