Case Background
Involved in designing, manufacturing and supplying a range of
medical equipment to hospitals and clinics throughout the USA

Core Competence: Research & Development

 First to expand the range & functionality of equipment and
integrate it with
 sophisticated diagnostic software

Operations: 70% of all orders involved some form of customization

from standard ‘base models’. Time taken for manufacturing from
receiving the specification would take 3 months. Focus was on
excellence and quality.

Strategy to get into new products referred to as ‘small black box’

products. This will involve moving into being a consumer
company, making and delivering a higher volume of more
standardized products.

Manufacturing dilemma- Ensure high quality & reliability by

investing in the process technology to make the product which
will be expensive. Subcontracting the products may cause
problems in quality.

Conclusion

Capacity : Increase for larger standardisedproduct

range (to cater to volume and speed
requirements)
Supply Technology: Reduce component suppliers &
develop new customer supply logistics (focus on
dependability & speed)
Process Technology: Shift from Lab to Mass
production (to cater to cost and conformance
quality requirements)
Development & Organization: Focus on
specification quality and cost reduction (to cater
to rising cost pressure and specification quality
requirements)
