Another method of expressing

concentration of solution is the mole

fraction. It is ratio of the number of
the number of moles of one
component to the total number of
number of moles in a solution. It is
represented by a capital letter X.
A solution is made by dissolving 1.25g 𝑁𝑎2 𝑆𝑂4 in 65.0g water. Calculate the mole of
fraction of the solute and the solvent.

Solution:
The solute is 1.25g 𝑁𝑎2 𝑆𝑂4 and the solvent is 65.0g water.
STEP 1: Get the number of moles of solute (𝑁𝑎2 𝑆𝑂4 ).
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑁𝑎2𝑆𝑂4 1.25 𝑔 𝑁𝑎2𝑆𝑂4
n𝑁𝑎2 𝑆𝑂4 = = = 0.0088 mole
𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑁𝑎2𝑆𝑂4 142𝑔Τ𝑛 𝑁𝑎2𝑆𝑂4

STEP 2: Get the number of moles of solvent (𝐻2 O).

𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐻2𝑂 65.0 𝑔 𝐻2𝑂
n𝐻2 O = = 𝑔 = 3.61 mole
𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐻2𝑂 18 ൗ𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝐻2𝑂
STEP 3: Get the total number of moles.
𝑛𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 + 𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = n𝑁𝑎2 𝑆𝑂4 + n𝐻2 O
= 0.0088 + 3.16 = 3.62 moles

STEP 4: Get the mole fraction of solute and solvent.

𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
Mole Fraction=
𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠
n(mole) =
𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠
0.0088 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑋𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 = = 0.0024
3.62 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠
3.61 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑋𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 = = 0.997
3.62 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠
Check your answer: 𝑋𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 + 𝑋𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 = 1
0.0024 + 0.0997= 0.9991 = 1
