NATURE OF INQUIRY &

RESEARCH
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
By the end of the lesson, you should
be able to:
1. know the technical definitions of inquiry
and research,
2. understand the benefits of inquiry-
based learning, and
3. identify the basic characteristics of
research that makes it a day to day
concept.
THOUGHT TO PONDER!
When you buy a new phone, what
are the usual considerations that
you have?
KWL CHART: WHAT IS
RESEARCH?
INSTRUCTIONS: Complete the first two
columns of the table below by
answering the questions. Your answers
can be in list form. Write your answers on
a ½ crosswise.

THE NATURE OF INQUIRY
THE NATURE OF INQUIRY
• It is “a learning process that motivates
you to obtain knowledge or
information about people, things,
places, or events.” (Baraceros, 2016)
• This is usually carried out via
investigating or asking questions.
THE NATURE OF INQUIRY
• When inquiring, you use a
combination of lower-order and
higher-order thinking skills (i.e.
inferential, critical, integrative,
creative, etc.)
• It is primarily a problem-solving
technique.
INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING
According to Baraceros (2016), following
this mode of learning will give you the
following advantages:
1. Elevates interpretative thinking
through graphic skills
2. Improves student learning abilities
3. Widens learners’ vocabulary
4. Facilitates problem-solving acts
INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING
5. Increases social awareness and
cultural knowledge
6. Encourages cooperative learning
7. Provides mastery of procedural
knowledge
8. Encourages higher-order thinking skills
9. Hastens conceptual understanding
THE NATURE OF RESEARCH
THOUGHT TO PONDER!
When getting to know someone for
the first time, how do the questions
usually progress?
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• It “pertains to any systematic
investigation of any social or natural
phenomena where results and
conclusions are aimed at contributing
to generalizable knowledge.”
(Melegrito & Mendoza, 2016)
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• Research requires data that is
“collected, analyzed, and interpreted
in order to understand, describe,
predict, or control a phenomenon or
set of phenomenon or to empower
individuals in particular contexts.”
(Melegrito & Mendoza, 2016)
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• Loosely, it is a process of discovering
and examining a claim or conclusion
in order to prove its truth.
• It is a form of investigation in which
you engage with high-level thinking
strategies.
INQUIRY VS. RESEARCH
What do you think is the difference
between inquiry and research?
INQUIRY VS. RESEARCH
• Both involve investigation through
questioning.
• However, research is more complex
because you do not simply ask
questions.
• In research, you collect and study
data, make analyses, and come up
with conclusions and/or solutions.

PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
Can you think of a concept or social
norm that was NOT “influenced” by
research?
PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
1. To learn how to work independently
2. To learn how to work scientifically or
systematically
3. To have in-depth knowledge of
something
4. To elevate your mental abilities by
letting you think in HOTS (higher-
order thinking strategies)
PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
5. To improve your reading and
writing skills
6. To be familiar with the basic tools of
research and the various
techniques of gathering data and
of presenting research findings.
7. To free yourself from the bias of a
textbook or a higher authority.
IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH
 To provide information
 To provide comparisons
 To help discern relationships
 To estimate unknown quantities
 To predict future outcomes
 To aid in decision making
 To justify claims or assertions
HOMEWORK
Bring a printed copy of the research
article assigned to your class.
Only one copy per group.
ACTIVITY:
TO TRUST OR NOT TO TRUST?
Decipher if the following people can
be trusted or not. Briefly explain why
they cannot be trusted. Write your
answers on your notebook.

CHARACTERISTICS OF
RESEARCH
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

#1: ACCURACY
• It must give correct or accurate
data.
• The footnotes, notes, and
bibliographical entries should be
honestly and appropriately
documented or acknowledged.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
#2: OBJECTIVENESS
• It must deal with facts, not from mere
opinions.
• Arguments indicated in the research
paper should not be declared as
opinions.
• From these facts, analysis must be
done.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

#3: TIMELINESS
• The research should be about a
topic that is fresh, relevant, and
intriguing.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

#4: RELEVANCE
• The topic must be relevant in
improving daily lives and/or the
human experience.
• It must also serve to provide
solutions to problems.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

#5: CLARITY
• It must make use of simple, direct,
concise, and correct language.
• By doing so, you are able to more
clearly deliver your central point
or discovery.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
#6: SYSTEMATIC
• Your research must have good
structure.
• Being organized doesn’t only
happen in the methodology;
each part of the research process
must be done in an orderly
manner.
EXERCISE: LET’S EVALUATE!

Let’s evaluate the sample research

paper and identify if its initial parts
have the characteristics of a good
research. Good luck!
RECAP!
• In a nutshell, what is the main
purpose of conducting research?
• What are the six key
characteristics of research?
