Types of Speeches

Occasionally, a speech may be given


to inform, to inspire, to entertain, to
introduce someone else, to accept an
honor given, or to eulogize a person.
ACCORDING TO PURPOSE
Informative Speech
 An informative speech will impart new knowledge or
more in-depth information on that topic.

Types:
1. Speeches about objects
2. Speeches about events
3. Speeches about processes
4. Speeches about concepts
Persuasive Speech
 A speech given to persuade has its primary goal: the
influencing of the attitudes, beliefs or the behavior of the
listeners.
Three types of questions:
1. Questions of Fact – deal with occurrences and the reasons
that they have happened.
2. Questions of Value – call for judgments about right or
wrong, ethical and unethical, good or bad and proper or
improper.
3. Questions of Policy – deal with whether certain courses
of action should be taken. Key word:‘should’
Entertainment Speech
 Entertainment speeches usually work within the cultural
framework of a particular group or society. Such speeches
may be “merely funny”.
Preparing an entertainment speech:
1. Make your material relevant to your audience and your
topic.
2. Keep your humorous speech funny.
3. Use a variety of sources of humor.
4. You can’t maintain a humorous mood for a long time.
You should always leave your audience wanting more of
you rather than less.
ACCORDING TO DELIVERY
Four Basic Methods for Delivering Public
Speeches

1. Manuscript Method – has an advantage in that there is no


danger of forgetting a part of your speech.
2. Memorized Method – is a memorized speech committed to
memory entirely and delivered from memory.
3. Impromptu Method – has both the development of ideas and
language are thought of at the moment of delivery.
4. Extemporaneous Method – is one where the ideas are
prepared but the language is definitely composed only at the
moment of delivery.
