Introduction to Public
Health

Jeremie R Galapon, RMT, MT(ASCPi)


Course Description
 This course will explores the complex determinants of health and is
designed to help students use their understanding of theses
determinants to develop strategies to improve the health of
communities and populations.
 The course also includes the study of the Philippine Healthcare
Delivery System, related laws in public health and the global context
of public health.
 The laboratory course is designed to enable students to develop
knowledge and skills to access, generate, critically evaluate, adapt
and implement evidence in public health practice (“evidence-based
practice” “EBP”) to improve community health. The practice of
evidence-based public health incorporates the best available evidence
supporting public health interventions with consideration of
community preferences, values, resources and assets.

Seatwork and Quizzes (30%)

 There are seatworks and quizzes in the course. The


format of quizzes will be multiple choice, true/false,
fill-in, matching, and short answer question.

 Seatworks are self-paced learning activities during


which all students work independently on a given
task at their own seat or in the library.

Assignments and Class Participation (20%)
 Learning is a collaborative process. Students are
expected to be in class and participate as actively as
they feel comfortable. These contributions are
invaluable to the learning process and are integral to
success in this course.

 The class will utilize a variety of learning strategies,


including lecture, discussion and interactive
activities. Assignments are tasks given to students
by their instructor to be completed out of the class
time. These activities are expected and constitute
part of your overall grade.

Attendance and Behavior Output (10%)
 In fairness to classmates, attendance and good
behavior at all classes is required.

 Please informed your instructor as soon as possible


in case of an anticipated absence.

 Unexcused absences may negatively impact your


grade. Excused absences, with documentation, will
not affect your grade.

Term Exams (40%)
 There are 2 major term exams (midterm and final)
consists of 50 questions that cover all of the
concepts taught in the course.

 To prepare for the exam, review all practice


questions thru schoology app.

 Prelim and prefinal are journal critiques or


PowerPoint presentation project.

Laboratory
There are two (2) papers (20%)

 Paper #1 – Public Health Issue Statement (The first


paper will require you to investigate a public health
problem)

 Paper #2: Public Health in the Community (The


second paper focuses on public health in action).
Guidelines of these papers will downloaded to your
schoology app.

Article Review and Critique (10%)
 A peer-reviewed article will be provided to the class during the
semester. Review and critique this article using the template provided.
In the template, you will be requested to identify: the research
questions/study aims, study design, population and sampling
procedures, intervention /comparison conditions if relevant, data
collection methods and measures, key findings, study strengths and
study limitations.

 Please do not copy large amounts of text to include in the review.


Summarize information when possible, in bullets, from the articles to
include in the review template.

 The review should be submitted in a word document thru schoology


app.

Attendance/Engagement (10%)

 The course is a face-to-face learning experience


designed for students to physically attend class and
participate in covering materials, interact with
classmates and share personal experiences,
knowledge, opinions, values as well as beliefs
regarding topics.

Laboratory activities (60%)

 Different laboratory activities will be given each


week.

 Guidelines of theses activities will be uploaded thru


your schoology app.

 Hard copies of all written materials are to be


submitted at, or before, the start of class and/or
electronically via the schoology app.

 As part of this course, we will utilize plagiarism


check to help determine the originality of your work.

 Any form of plagiarism will get a grade of zero in that


particular written works.

Late paper policy

 Late paper will lose half a grade for every day past
the due date.

 “Late” is defined as being 1 minute past the


deadline.

 Please note that computer, printer problems and


internet problems are not acceptable reasons for
having a late paper. Please be sure to save your
work regularly on your computer and to back it up
elsewhere (e.g. USB drive, DropBox, GoogleDrive).

clinical care: prevention, treatment, and management of illness and


the preservation of mental and physical well-being through the services
offered by medical and allied health professions; also known as health
care.
determinant: factor that contributes to the generation of a trait.

epidemic or outbreak: occurrence in a community or region of cases


of an illness, specific health-related behavior, or other health-related
event clearly in excess of normal expectancy. Both terms are used
interchangeably; however, epidemic usually refers to a larger
geographic distribution of illness or health-related events.
