MINING INDUSTRY

Background on Mining Industry in the

Philippines

HISTORY:

Mining in the Philippines started in the pre-colonial period.

In a number of regions in the archipelago, indigenous

communities mined for gold, copper, nickel, and many other
minerals.

Natives from all over the country used gold, pearls, agates, and
so on, for body ornaments.

It is noted that many merchants form Luzon,
Brunei and Jolo traveled continually all
throughout Mindanao in search for slaves
and gold.

The first commercial mine in the country was in

Benguet (1903) , in Central Luzon,
established by the Benguet Mining
Corporation.

Extensive mining of gold and nickel is done at

the Acupan which started in 1927.
According to Rappler, the mining industry in the Philippines
is very controversial after Environment Sec. Gina Lopez
ordered the closure of about 23 mining operations and
cancellations of a total of 75 mineral production sharing
agreements earlier this year.
Our country is the 5th most mineral-rich country in the world
for gold, nickel, copper, and chromite.

All the regions, excluding NCR and ARMM, in the country

allow mining operations.
About 30 million hectares of land areas in the Philippines is
deemed as possible areas for metallic minerals.
The Mining Act of 1995 allows for foreign ownership of
mining assets and exploration permits.

thus said to be one of the most
unique attractions.

The mine was operated by the Benguet
Corporation for 8 decades.

The reception of round-metal-sheet called

CHAPA serves as an ID to the miners. Every
one has one and takes it into a box when
entering the mine. *insert pic of chapa

Common chemicals used in the mining
industry are cyanide, sulfuric acid, and
solvents for separating minerals from
ore.

And Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil is

used in blasting tunnels
ACQUIRED DISEASE SUFFERED BY MINERS DUE TO
LONG AND PROLONGED EXPOSURE OF SAID
CHEMICALS ABOVE
SILICOSIS, a debilitating and potentially deadly
lung disease. It develops through of excessive
inhalation of concentrations of respirable
crystalline silica dust. INSERT PIC NG TAO NA

In underground coal mines, continuous miner

operators have a high risk of overexposure to
silica with approximately 25%.

WORKERS INSIDE THE MINING
INDUSTRY

GEOLOGISTS- studies the solid and liquid matter that

constitutes the Earth.
GEODETIC ENGINEER- studies spatial data technologies and
theory that involve one or more research using
photogrammetry , mapping , image processing, etc.
MINING ENGINEERS- applies science and technology to the
extraction of minerals from earth.
METALLURGISTS- specializes in metals such as steell, aluminum,
iron and copper.
All interested Filipino applicants may work in
