SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE

WHAT IS SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE ?

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) describes a concrete

with the ability to compact itself only by means of its own
weight without the requirement of vibration.

Self-compacting concrete has been successfully used in

France, Denmark, the Netherlands and UK, apart from
Japan. It is gaining wide acceptability because no
vibration is needed and noise pollution is eliminated.

This type of concrete flows easily around the

reinforcement and into all corners of the formwork.
 It leads to reduced construction times, especially at
large construction sites because no compaction
work is necessary.
 Reduced noise pollution since vibrators are not
necessary.

 Higher and more homogenous concrete quality

across the entire concrete cross-section, especially
around the reinforcement.

 It proven a very faster & cheaper method of pouring

concrete.

 Typically higher early strength of the concrete so

that formwork removal can be performed more
quickly.
The Materials used in SCC are the same as in conventional
concrete except that an excess of fine material and chemical
admixtures are used. Also, a viscosity-modifying agent(VMA)
will be required because slight variations in the amount of
water or in the proportions of aggregate and sand will make
the SCC unstable, that is, water or slurry may separate from
the remaining material. The powdered materials are fly ash,
silica fume, lime stone powder, glass filler and quartzite
filler. The use of pozzolanic materials helps the SCC to flow
better. The pozzolanic reaction in SCC, as well as in
Conventional Slump Concrete (CSC), provides more durable
concrete to permeability and chemical attacks.
BENEFITS OF USING SCC :

ENGINEERING BENEFITS:-
i. Better surface finishes.
ii. Easier placing.
iii. Improved durability.
iv. Greater freedom in design.
v. Thinner concrete sections.
vi. Ease of filling restricted sections and hard to
reach areas.
vii. Allows for innovative architectural features.
viii. Homogeneous and uniform concrete.
ix. Better reinforcement bonding.
 Minimum labour involved.
 Rapid construction without
mechanical vibration.
 Low noise-level in the plants and
construction sites.
 Overcome problems arise with
vibration.
 Safer working environment.
 Accelerated project schedules.
 Allows for innovative architectural
feature.
.
DEVELOPING SCC MIXES:-
SCC mixes must meet three key properties:

1. Ability to flow into and completely fill

intricate and complex forms under its own
weight.

2. Ability to pass through and bond to

congested reinforcement under its own
weight.

3. High resistance to aggregate segregation.

 Concrete is considered as a two phase
material, namely paste phase and
aggregate phase.
 Composite of concrete is determined
separately optimizing paste phase and
aggregate skeleton and finally choosing a
paste volume that results in required self
compatibility and strength.

FIELD
CONSIDERATIONS: -
 Force action mixture is recommended but gravity type and
tilted axis mixtures have also been used.
 Limit of vertical fall distance is 5M.
 Generally S.C.C won’t pose any problem with the normal
formwork if its good at sealing. But if we need to go for high
raise structures like long columns, the bottom pumping.
method can be used, which also helps in solving the problem
of entrapped air.
 Water curing is needed for period of 3-7days to avoid plastic
shrinkage cracks. Later the concrete surface can be covered
with a plastic cover or a curing membrane.
APPLICATION OF SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE:-

Use of S.C.C is not confined to any type of structure. It can be used for
construction of almost all kinds of structures. Some of the pioneering
applications are --

 Bridges (anchorage blocks and piers)

 Liquefied gas storage tanks
 Tunnel linings
 Building components like columns, foundations and walls
 Sandwich structures (steel concrete structures)
 Repair works (girders, tunnel linings)
 Prefabricated elements (panels, furniture, beams etc)
 Piles and pile caps
 Monolithic structures
