INTRODUCTION:

• In the time where technology is merging with environmental awareness,

consumers are looking for ways to contribute to the relief of their own
carbon footprints.
• Green technology initiatives are being supported by both the government
and corporate business.
• This project of a solar powered grass cutter will relieve the consumer from
cutting their own lawns and will reduce both environmental and noise
pollution.
• This design is meant to be an alternate green option to the popular and
environmentally hazardous petroleum product powered grass cutter.

WORKING:
• It is a fully automated grass cutting robotic vehicle.
• The system use batteries to power the vehicle movement motors as
well as the grass cutter motor.
• We intend to use a solar panel to charge the battery so that there is
no need of charging it externally.
• The grass cutter and vehicle motors are interfaced to Raspberry PI 3
that controls the working of all the motors.
• It is also interfaced to an ultrasonic sensor for object detection. This
is programmed so that the vehicle motors move in forward direction
in case no obstacle is detected. On obstacle detection the ultrasonic
sensor monitors it and stops the grass cuter motor to avoid any
damage to the object/human/animal or the grass cutting blade itself.
• Our goal is to let our robot see the difference between grass and
concrete while monitoring its surroundings continuously using a
humidity sensor. Since concrete/dirt and grass are distinctively
different in density and moisture levels, the humidity is a good factor
to distinguish both materials.
COMPONENTS USED:

• DC Motors: 2 (high torque, for movement) +1 (high rpm, for

grass cutting).
• Sensors: Ultrasonic (For object detection), humidity sensor
(Ground type detection), Accelerometer.
• Power unit: Solar Panel, DC-DC Convertor, Charging circuit,
Battery, Regulators.
• Controlling System: Raspberry PI3-i/o interfacing, Motor
driver.
• Mechanical parts: 4 chain wheels, Chassis, Sharp circular
blade, Protective cover.
FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS:

• An additional manual mode can be added with which the user can
control it wirelessly from a given distance through smart phones or
remote controls. For this a camera can be fixed on the robot, which
will give the live feed as we operate it.
• Infra-red sensors can be used to detect the heat signature of
animals and can be used to avoid the animals on head-on
encounter.
• Solar tracking devices can be used to harness maximum solar
energy available.
• To cut the grass selectively based on density, suitable sensors can
be employed.
