RELATIVE PRONOUN

RELATIVE PRONOUN
Relative pronoun adalah kata ganti penghubung
yang digunakan untuk membuat kalimat
majemuk.

There are five relative pronouns :


1. Who
2. Whom
3. Whose
4. Which
5. That
WHO
Who is generally used for people.
Who – orang sebagai subjek

Ex:
1. Mr. Abdul is Inem’s father. He works as teacher
Mr. Abdul who is Inem’s father works as teacher.

2. The girl … won the poster contest is in third grade.

The girl is in 3rd grade. She won the poster contest.

The girl who won the poster contest is in 3rd grade


WHOM
Whom is generally used for people
Whom – orang sebagai objek

Ex :
1. Mr. Abdul is Inem’s father. I met him last week.
Mr. Abdul whom I met last week is Inem’s father.
2. She had three children. All of them went to Georgia
Southern University.
She had three children, all of whom went to Georgia
Southern University.
WHOSE
whose is the only relative pronoun to show
possession or ownership!
Whose – possessive ( pengganti kepunyaan)
Ex :
1. Mr. Abdul works as teacher. His daughter is
Inem.
Mr. Abdul whose daughter is Inem works as
teacher.
WHICH
Which tells more about things. It is used when the
clause added is unnecessary or nonessential to
the sentences understanding.
Which – pengganti benda/hewan
Ex :
1. The bag is good looking. It is my cousin’s bag.
The bag which is good looking is my cousin’s bag.

2. A turtle is an animal. It lives in the sea.

A turtle is an animal which lives in the sea.


THAT
That sebagai kata ganti untuk orang dan benda
sebagai subject atau object.
That berfungsi netral bisa menggantikan
“who/which/whom”.
Ex.
 I know a man. He is a lawyer.

 I know a man who / that is a lawyer.

 A dog ran away. A dog is mine.


 The dog which /that ran away is mine.

RELATIVE ADVERBS
Relative adverb adalah kata keterangan yang
digunakan untuk mengawali adjective clause
yang menerangkan kata benda pada complex
sentence. Ada tiga macam relative adverb yaitu:
where, when dan why. Where untuk
menerangkan tempat (kota, negara, dll). When
untuk menerangkan waktu (hari, bulan, tahun,
dll). Why untuk menerangkan reason (alasan).
WHERE

Adalah relative adverb yang diguanakan untuk


noun of place(noun yang berhubungan dengan
tempat), contoh noun of place adalah: place,
country, village, city, district, etc.
Example :
 I will show you the secret room where I save all
of my stuffs there.
 Aku akan memperlihatkan ruang rahasia
dimana aku menyimpan semua barang-barangku
disana.
WHEN
Adalah relative adverb yang diguanakan untuk
noun of time(noun yang berhubungan dengan
waktu), contoh: day, date, week, year, month, etc.

 My younger sister will go to Singapore in


February when she is graduated from junior
high school.
 Adik saya akan pergi ke Singapura pada bulan
Februari ketika ia lulus dari SMP.
WHY
Adalah relative adverb yang diguanakan untuk
menunjukkan sebuah reason(alasan).

 I do not know the reason why he failed in theory


test.
 Saya tidak tahu alasan mengapa ia gagal dalam
ujian teori.
The House is very big, Sherly lives there.
• The house where sherly lives is very big.

The day was Sunday. I called you on that day.


* The day when I called you was Sunday.
