LET’S HAVE A GAME !!!

Let’s have a
GAME !!!
Iarrange mo ako , From
closest to farthest .
OBJECTIVES :
 To learn what is
atmosphere .
 To know the layers
of the atmosphere.
 To understand the
lesson better and
well.
Atmosphere
 It comes from the
GREEK WORD
(ATMOS) meaning
“VAPOUR” and
(SPHAIRA) MEANING
“SPHERE.”
The earth is surrounded
by the atmosphere which
is the body of the air or
gasses that protects
the planet and enables
life.
Most of our
atmosphere is
located close to the
earth’s surface
where it is the most
dense .
It is made up of a
mixture of
NITROGEN (78%) ,
OXYGEN (21%) AND
OTHER GASSES (1%).
An ATMOSPHERE is
more likely to be
retained if the
gravity it is subject
to is HIGH and the
temperature of the
atmosphere is LOW .
The ATMOSPHERE is
comprised of layers based on
its temperature .
The layers are the
TROPOSPHERE,
STRATOSPHERE, MESOSPHERE
THERMOSPHERE and
EXOSPHERE .
This is the LOWEST
PART of the
ATMOSPHERE . The
part where we live in
. It contains most of
our weather such as clouds, rain and
snow. In this part of the atmosphere the
temperature gets colder as the distance
above the earth increases by about 6.5
degrees c per kilometer .
CONTAINS ABOUT 75% OF
ALL THE AIR IN THE
ATMOSPHERE AND ALMOST
ALL THE WATER VAPOUR
WHICH FORMS CLOUD AND
RAIN . IT IS THE LAYER
CLOSEST to the EARTH . It begins at the
surface of the earth and extends out to
about 4-12 miles . This layer also known
as LOWER ATMOSPHERE.
It extends upwards
from the TROPOPAUSE
to about 50 km. It
contains much of the
ozone in the
atmosphere .
Temperatures in the stratosphere are
highest over the summer pole and
lowest over the winter pole. By
absorbing dangerous UV radiation .
The ozone in the
stratosphere
protects us from
skin cancer and
other health
damage .
TEMPERATURE RISES WITHIN
STRATOSPHERE BUT STILL REMAINS
WELL BELOW FREEZING .
From about 35-50
miles above the
surface of the
earth lies the
mesosophere where
air is thin and molecules molecules
are great distance apart .
Temperatures in the mesosophere
reach of a low of -120 DEGREES C .
The thermosphere rises
several hundred miles
above the earth’s
surface, from 50 miles
up to about 400 miles.
Temperature increaSES
as high as 2000 degrees
C . THE AIR FEEL COLD
BECAUSE THE HOT MOLECULES ARE SO FAR
APART . THIS LAYER IS KNOWN AS THE UPPER
ATMOSPHERE.
Extending from the top
of the thermosphere to
10,000 km above the
earth is the exosphere.
This layer has very
few atmospheric
molecules , which can escape into space .
IT CONTAINS MAINLY OXYGEN AND HYDROGEN
ATOMS BUT THEY RARELY COLLIDE -. THEY
FoLLoW “baLLastIC” traJeCtorIes
UNDER
INFLUENCE OF
GRAVITY AND
SOME OF THEM
ESCAPE RIGHT
OUT INTO SPACE
.
IMPORTANCE OF ATMOSPHERE :
Is an important part of
what makes Earth livable.
It bLoCks some oF the sun’s
dangerous rays from
reaching Earth. It traps
heat making earth a
comfortable temperature .
And the oxygen within our
atmosphere is essential for
life .
DISTURBANCE OF THE ATMOSPHERE
Over the past
centuries , greenhouse
gases and other air
pollutants released
into the atmosphere
have been causing big
changes like global
warming , ozone holes
and acid rain .
