UNDER COLONIAL
HISTORY
 Filipino historians were captives of Spanish and
Americans.
 The conquerors (Spanish and Americans)
viewed/interpret the Philippine History in their
own prism of preduce which means, they do not
have real or exact experiences making their point
of views bias.
 Some Filipino writers/historians make literary
pieces against the Spaniards (they refuted
Filipino defamations and highlighted abuses of
Spanish FRAILOCRACY)
 Frailocracy - form of government where the
rulers are the friars.
Example: During the Spanish Colonial Era,
the priests were so powerful that they even ruled
the Philippine Island.
2 Mistakes/Failure in the Past
Filipino historians were not able to perceive that
in order to make history or include something in the
history, things should be critically scrutinized and
evaluated.
The task to record latest possible history to
further understand the past was neglected.
The major mistakes done are the main reasons
why the task to correct historical misimpressions
was not pursued.
Specialized studies done by historians with
complex comprehension might alter the real history
of the Philippines because of varying ideas due to
the depth of their knowledge.

THE FILIPINO
PEOPLE
 Beyond writing Philippine History from the point of
view of the Filipino, the task is to advance to the
writing of a truly Filipino History, the History of the
FILIPINO PEOPLE.
- Anonymous masses of
individuals; generated by their collective
lives and struggles.
For history, commonly defined as the
story of man, but in this task, is not the
story of man the individual, but man the
collective; associated man.
Man alone, man the individual, could
never have become human except in
association with other men.
Without society, human would have remained like
other animals, unable to consciously change his
environment or himself.
Men must work together to fight natural or social
forces stronger than their individual selves.
Struggle is therefore the essence of life, whether
of an individual or a society.
An individual has no history apart from society,
and society is the historical product of people in
struggle.
Human society is the cause and the result of
people in motion and in constant struggle to realize
the human potential, for the human being is the
only species that has unlimited possibilities for
development.
MOTIVATORS
OF HISTORY
PEOPLE'S EFFORTS TO ATTAIN A BETTER LIFE
History is not merely a chronology of events; it is not the story of heroes and great
men. Essentially, history consists of the people's efforts to attain a better life. The
common people possess the capacity to make history.
Historic struggles provide the people with lessons in their upward march and give
form and strength to the constantly changing society.
The people should also have their history for they have made history through their
participation in mass actions resulting in the unfolding of the social forms that seek
to realize their goals.
But in the recorded pages of history they have remained in the background, as if
they had played only a negligible role. It is those who rule who have had their
names and exploits emblazoned on these pages. The people have been taken for
granted and their role has been minimized or even denied.

WHO ARE THE INARTICULATE IN HISTORY?
They are the people behind every success or every wonders built in each civilazation. Mostly, they
are slaves and prisoners.
WHO ARE THE ARTICULATE IN HISTORY?
They are the leaders, emperors, or those who held power over the people, oftenly, they are the
only one who were given credits for the success of the civilization.
WHY ARE THEY INARTICULATE?
It's because their deeds have been rarely recorded, however their collaborative effort can be
given importance. But since there were leaders, they were the only one who were given credits
and easily disregarding the role of the inarticulates.
But as we gain knowledge, with the use of technologies, we were able to know
what was really happened through the INTERRELATIONSHIP OF PARTICULITIES.
 INTERRELATIONSHIP OF PARTICULARITIES - Showing the relationship of every small details in
every primary sources in order to come up with a fact/idea.
REDRESSING
THE
IMBALANCE
DEMYTHOLOGIZING PHILIPPINE HISTORY AND
EXPOSING CERTAIN EVENTS
Redressing means to put right a wrong or give payment for a wrong that has been done.
DEMYTHOLOGIZING - reinterpret
Exposing the people who are behind in making our history possible wherein they are part in
changing our society, the progress of civilization could not be possible without the people in their
time playing definite and irreplaceable roles since HISTORY is NOTHING without the PEOPLE.
When intellectual decolonization shall have been accomplished, a historical account can be produced w/c
will present a fuller, more balanced picture of reality.
Intellectual decolonization is being free from colonial mentality.
So there should be a balance historical account to those inarticulate ones who are part in the Philippine
history. They should have been given a privilege in our history. Since, an individual has a knowledge to
share to everyone.

LIMITATION
History is important.
It needs more of our efforts in examining sources of documents available
interred to History.
It takes a lot of time to study, investigate and examine History.

Real History of the Philippines can be a solution to solve problems in today's present

REDISCOVERING THE PAST means developing a
progressive and better nation using the past as our guide and our
driving force to do so. Some things that happened in the past with
somehow similar to what is happening to this present generation we
can take action to resolve it better for a better results.
THE UNIFYING
THREAD
Despite the tremendous obstacles that Spanish
and American colonialism created by their
subtle operations on the consciousness of the
Filipino, ever higher levels of political and
economic awareness were being achieved in
struggle, at least among some sectors of the
population.
THE MOTIVE
FORCE
Through the increasing consciousness of the Filipino to the
tradition of struggle (colonial oppression), they became more
better for they were able to know themselves or who they really
are, that they are true Filipinos living in their own teritory not
slaves nor follower of other races.
Their consciousness set them free.
The unifying thread of the Philippine history is the FILIPINO
RESISTANCE TO COLONIAL OPPRESSION.
